"I think I'm depressed," I say out loud laying in my bed in my room. Beau looks over to me from across my room and walks over and lays down with me. "Why?" He asks turning his head towards me.
James Beau Allen aka Beau is my best friend. There is no one I'm closer to. I Met him In 6th grade when he moved to this shitty small city from New york. He lived five houses down but we officially met on Jessica Smith's birthday. Where we were thrown in a closet playing 7 minutes in heaven. We both came to the conclusion we were going to kiss and when he leaned in he instead bumped our heads together. We just laughed about it for the remaining six minutes, and we've been friends since which means he must really love me given I was a bit of a bitch in middle school. Beau Is attractive I won't even lie and he's full of light, yet he doesn't see himself like that at all. He's like me in the sense that he hates this small city. The difference between him and me though is that he's going to get out. He's adventurous some might even say impulsive. Does now thinks later. I wish I could do that but all I do is think. He also gets a lot of girls which isn't a bad thing. I worry about him. I guess when you love someone, and you see them like truly see who they are in their fucking core you know what they deserve. Believe me, Beau deserves the best.
"My world is ending today Beau," I say looking over at him to see him laughing at me. "Are you laughing at my misery?" I say punching him in the arm. He put his arms up in defense
"I'm not laughing at you, Hadley it's just you tend to be overdramatic at times." He said.
"I just I'm not looking forward to seeing him and her." I sigh "At least I got to avoid them during the summer but now it's inevitable. I'm going to see them together where ever I go." I say sitting up from my bed.
"It's been a while, Hadley, you're going to have to move on at some point." I nod agreeing with him.
"So why not take this opportunity to truly move on? Because the more you hold on to it the more it's going to hurt." He says turning on his side and facing me.
"I know that, but don't worry I'm already moving on," I say getting up picking up my books, and putting them in my bag. "Oh really." He says sitting up from my bed.
"All you've done all summer is mope around when you found out he got a girlfriend," Beau says looking at me.
"Mopping is part of the moving on process. It's just that this is his first girlfriend since our breakup. It's weird to see him be with someone else that's all." I say putting my shoes on.
We both turn our heads as we hear a knock on the door. "Come in," I yell. The door swings open at the door frame is Marley.
Marley is my Dad's girlfriend I met her when I was 7. I won't lie I wasn't fond of her when I first met her. I did give her her fair share of trouble, but then I started to realize how much she loved me. Seeing her be there for my brother made me value her more. Marley is extremely smart. She's currently getting her doctrine in environmental law/policy. Even though she has always been so busy, she still finds time to make breakfast for us and pack us lunch. She does love us like we were her own. She was at every shitty musical, soccer match, and band recital and she makes my dad happy.
"Good morning! Are you guys excited for your last first day of high school?" She says while putting down the plate with two muffins on it.
"How could we be the world is ending today," Beau says grabbing one of the muffins.
"Really, why is it ending this time," Marley says handing me a cup of coffee.
"Mom!"
"What? I'm not judging I'm just curious." She says to me. Beau gives me a look telling me to tell her.
"I'm just sad High School is ending," I say taking a Sip of my coffee.
"Aw honey," Marley says giving me a hug and kiss on my forehead.
"So how are you feeling about seeing Jake?" I look over at her shocked and then look over to see Beau trying to hold in his laugh.
"I'm fine mom."
"Are you sure? I'm your mom I think I know when you're upset," she says.
"I promise I'm fine mom," I say to her.
"She's lying Marley, She's not fine," Beau says still eating his muffin. She immediately looks over at me and gives me a look.
She walks up to me and moves the hair out of my face, and puts her hand on my cheek. I already knew what was coming next. She use to always do this to me when I was younger.
"You've got to learn to leave-"
"To leave the table when love is no longer being served," I said interrupting her.
"To show everybody you're still able." She says stepping away.
"Nina Simone." She says pointing to both me and Beau. I couldn't help but smile at her. That was Marley's favorite song. We are soon interrupted by a car honking its horn.
"That would be our ride," Beau says while looking out the window. "Okay, we got to go, mom," I say grabbing my bag and hugging her.
"Marcus! If you're not down in 5 minutes we are leaving you." I yell walking out of my room and running into the kitchen to see my dad.
"Bye, dad I have to go now," I say giving him a quick hug. "Wait we didn't get to take a picture of your brother and you." He says patting his pockets looking for his phone Marley then hands it to him.
"Marcus get down here to take a picture!" My dad yells. "I'm brushing my teeth." He yells.
Asher Williams AKA my Dad. My dad is young but that is because he and my mom had me when they were seniors. They were teen parents. My dad is very close to us I think it is because he never had that with his family. My dad is not a traditional dad he and Marley had their party phase but that's not saying they weren't responsible. They would party their asses off till 4 in the morning and still be on time to pick up Marcus and me from Beau's house. He is a good dad the best even. He even loved my mom like really loved her. I think he was the sadness when my mom passed.
And Marcus is my little brother which is wild to say given he's way taller than me. Marcus is two years younger than me so he's a sophomore. Regardless of him being a nerd he and I are very close. In fact, all of my friends are his friends. Marcus was only 3 when my mom died he had no idea what was going on. He use to always ask questions about my mom my dad would never give him clear answers but to be fair my dad was mourning. So he would come to me with the questions. I would try my best to answer them but as time passed, I started to forget.
"Ugh okay, fine Beau and Hadley smile." He says holding the phone. While I and Beau stand for the picture.
"I Can't believe you're a senior. You're getting so old." He says with his arm around Marley.
"MARCUS HURRY UP!" I yell at the top of my lungs.
"Oh gosh calm down I'm ready," Marcus says to us as I roll my eyes. "Alright get together so I can take a picture of you both."
"Dad we are already running late," I say. "Just hurry and smile he says. "Fine," I say hugging Marcus.
"Okay say cheese!"
