"Hey, when we get in the car don't talk about Jake okay," I say to Beau."Those are our friends Hadley. They are not going to judge you. You know that right?" He says facing me and walking backward. I instantly flip him off and open the car door.
"Hey losers," Heather says to us turning to face us from the front seat.
"Happy first day you guys!" Candy says also turning around to face us.
That's Heather we met in 7th-grade orientation. I was introduced to her and candy. Heather is by far the smartest person I've ever met. She also doesn't take shit from anyone. If you were to ask her, she would probably say she was the coolest out of all of us. Which Is true, but we don't tell her that. She's also probably the most approachable out of all of us. Heather gets along with everyone. She's at the top of our class, gets good grades, and has a great relationship with her friends. Everyone and I mean everyone wants to be her. Heather's dreams are bigger than this small city we are trapped In, but whenever I sit and hear her talk about her dreams there is no doubt in my mind that she will get them.
Then there is candy, candy's parents are hippies like she was born in a commune. That's why her name is candy. Her parents are a trip but funny enough candy convinced them to let her have a normal life. Even convinced them she wanted a good education. Whenever I think of Candy I just assume Heather is right there with her. They're pretty close and we have a private school to thank for that. Candy is also incredibly goofy and smart She doesn't show it as much. But She is the best of us, always looking out for all of us. Kind of like the mom of the group. Her whole world could be falling apart and she would still check up on us.
"Alright calm down Candy no one is excited about school," Heather says as she pulls out of my driveway. "I am very excited," Beau says to everyone.
"Well, that makes one of us." Says my brother. "Why are you so excited Beau?" asked Candy.
"You know I'm just excited to see everyone, and this is our last year together before me and Hadley leave for New York." He says putting his arm around me as I give a faint smile. I still have yet to apply to NYU.
"I know I still can't believe you guys are leaving it's just crazy to think that we are gonna be separated by the end of the year." Candy says looking at us.
"I don't know what I'm going to do when you all leave. I'm still going to have 2 yrs here." My brother says to us.
"Aww Marcus," Heather says looking at him through the rearview mirror. "Don't worry most of the group is staying here," I say messing up his hair as he pushes me away.
"Still I'm going to have to make new friends. I'm already a sophomore you know how hard that's going to be?" Marcus says to us.
"Well, you'll still have Madison she's only a junior." As soon as candy said that the whole car went silent.
"Yeah no, I think I'm good," Marcus says as he places his hand on mine to comfort me.
"No it's fine you should be friends with her. I mean she is kind." I say to him but I'm just saying it out loud to everyone.
"Yeah kind of a bitch." Heather says right after me.
"Heather!" Candy says to her.
"What I'm just saying what everyone is thinking," Heather says defending herself.
"No it's fine, that's good Heather let's get it all out now before we get to school," Beau says as he motions with his hands to continue.
"There is nothing to get out," I say.
"Oh, there is a lot to say," Marcus says.
"Marcus stop, don't," I say shaking my head at him.
"Look you guys she didn't do anything personally to me in fact she's nice. We have no reason to hate her." I say as we pull into the school parking lot.
Heather immediately parks the car and turns around. "All I'm saying Hadley is I love you and you're such a kind person, but you don't have to be nice to her. You don't owe her anything." Heather says to me.
"I know that, but I'm doing it for myself, you guys. I'm doing it for my own sanity." I say looking at all of them. "So can we just all go in there and just pretend like nothing is happening, and be nice to her?" I ask all of them.
"Yeah, we can." All of them say at the same time. "Okay good." I nodded taking my seatbelt off.
"Alright let's go," Beau says.
