Pulling back from Fury, Maya starred wide-eyed at him. "How?"
"Wasn't hard to figure out with a bit of digging into your family history, something which no one at the compound did for some reason. Know anything about that?" Fury questioned keeping his voice low whilst Bucky talked to Clint's family.
"Maybe," Maya smirked, matching his quiet tone.
"I understand why you didn't want them to know," Fury motion towards Bucky. He stepped back from Maya, taking a deep breath in, now speaking louder, "Go settle into the house and then we'll have a talk." Maya nodded in agreement. At the same moment, Clint came over to show her into his families home. She thanked him for the hospitality as they walked, the rest of his family and Bucky a few steps a head of them.
The house was cozy, and deceptively large. It was well lived in. Family photos, holiday purchases and small trinkets filled most counter top spaces. It smelled like pine, but not the overwhelming type, it was subtle, like a warm breeze on a spring morning.
"I only have two rooms set up since Fury decided to drop in unannounced," Laura explained. "We have a pretty comfy couch though," she smiled, trying to offer the next best thing.
"I'll take the couch," Bucky said in a monotone voice.
"We still have a few hours till dinner, so feel free to explore the property. Just don't brake anything please," Laura asked politely.
"I can make dinner," Maya offered. "It's the last I could do after you've let us into your home."
"You don't mind cooking for eight people?"
"Not at all, Laura," Maya confirmed.
"I'll help," Bucky jutted in. Maya gave him a smile on thanks.
With the help of the children, who were very excited to have superhuman guests, Maya was shown to her room. They bombarded her with questions about what it was like at the avengers compound, what the avengers themselves were like and even asked if Bucky was her boyfriend. She laughed at this telling them no.
Walking back outside, Maya went to find Fury, who hadn't come into the house yet. A wide expanse of fields surrounded the house littered with trees, some of which had targets etched and drawn on them.
"Like the house?" Fury asked.
"Hmmm," Maya hummed. "It's very-"
"Family oriented," he finished for her. She scoffed in response. "That's why your here, right? An opportunity to run off and find your Uncle. Leave the one friend you've made behind all for the hope that Zemo has changed. I can save you a lot of time, he hasn't."
"I'm not losing anything by searching for him."
"Bucky would be losing something. He's taken a liking to you, something I've never seen him do, not since Steve."
"There are better people to be friends with then me. I don't deserve his friendship, his kindness."
"You know, he'd say the exact same thing," Fury laughed. "Why not stay? Let the good Bucky sees in you become the same thing you see. You have the potential-"
"To be an avenger?" Maya sneered. "I use to dream of being one when I was first being tortured by HYDRA. I thought maybe they will come and rescue me, maybe they will want me, maybe somebody will want me after being bloodied and bruised. But then I realised, you people only want me for the things I can do, the power I hold. You want to be able to control it because you're afraid of what it could do when not in your hands."
Maya took a step closer to Fury, causing him to take one away from her. "And you just confirmed it," she continued, letting out a hollow laugh. "You are scared of me, and that's the greatest power I could ever have. Fear is humanities weakness. It's our downfall."
