Falling with no destination was like driving in the early morning hours of the day. Eerily quiet. Utterly chaotic. Yet somehow, peaceful. Peaceful until the realisation of having to go home sets in, the realisation of having to sleep for the remainder of the new day because of your night of fun.
The emptiness of wind tore at Maya as she fell. It's fingers snagging themselves in her hair, in her clothes, in her soul. Tearing pieces of it away, stealing glistening darkness along with it. She was left stark naked, inevitably falling, smoke trailing behind her as her powers fell away from her. It swirled and curled and laughed at her as she dropped further away from reality. Its mocking echoed in the hollowness of the dark void, reverberating off of itself. The laughter morphed into quiet mutters, voices Maya recognised from her past. Each as haunting and taunting as the last.
She was coming apart at the seams. Her stiches breaking, her edges fraying. And she didn't know how to sow.
Flecks of skin melted into the plooms of her power being stripped from her being. Her body changing, altering itself to what it was before HYDRA, before the mutations. Blurs of colour interrupted the dark nothingness through which she fell. Indecipherable as the flashed past, joined by the source of the muttering voices. They began to fall with her, keeping in line with her for seconds at a time, allowing Maya to catch glimpse of them.
Her life quite literally flashed before her eyes. Each colourful spot was a moment from her life. The soundtrack to her life. Caring eyes, soft hugs, gentle voices. Her family that had become a joyously painful memory. Tears joined the smoke and ash trail growing behind her.
When each glimpse of colour and sound was too consumed by the void, Maya couldn't recall it. The memory of it ripped from her. Some she was happy to lose, like those of HYDRA's torture. It felt refreshing to no longer have the pain of the memories shadow her each move, the small scars a reminder of it all. But like the memories, the scars faded to, stripped from her body painlessly.
The bleak colour of HYDRA's compound followed her descent. Her then short blonde hair a beacon of light in comparison. Two men where strapping her into the electric chair as she chanted her name over and over again in refusal to forget who she was. Physically forcing herself to remember who she was.
Maya couldn't help but laugh at the reversed situation that she was in now. Willingly forgetting her past. Willingly forgetting the very shape of her body.
The snapshots of her life slowly turned red. Blood splatters on walls and floors and herself. The red from her ledger being wiped clean as the memories whooshed past her, more easily forgotten due to Maya not wanting to be reminded of them. Moments of her infiltrating the USA's parliament events took over from the murderess test runs HYDRA had her complete.
Maya willed her body to fall faster, unable to bear the idea of reliving such things. The flash of sliver and steel blue eyes caught her attention. Her focus honing in on the blur of the two colours as they too zoomed past her and from her memory.
"No!" she shouted to the void. Great feathery masses shot from her back, ripping at the air around her. Screams of agony escaped from her mouth due to the pain of her wings trying to be consumed by the emptiness around her, the weapon that could fight against its iron hold.
"Wait," Maya pleaded with the void. As if in answer, the pain in her back subsided, just a fraction, allowing her to fly against winds current and back to the blue and silver streak.
She came to a halt in front of the an unnaturally large image of Bucky's defiant face the first time she met him at the America's governmental ball. The memory panned outwards when Maya touched it. Bucky stood alone with the other attendees all paralysed on the floor, death staring her.
