Akash and I made our way down to the IT department, his breathing was fragmented.

“The Heart Wants What It Wants” was playing in the elevator, and for a few seconds I suddenly felt cold and alone. Things were so unclear. Akash and I were obviously not going to last, what we have isn’t a trusted relationship. It was a fling. We established that. So why was I feeling like I was stuck in an eternal fog?

The familiar ding of the elevator brought me back to my senses.

“We need to look for Dan, he’ll help us.” I nodded blankly.

After navigating the floor, we found Dan, a scrawny kid fresh out of college wearing Ray Bans too big for his face and a simple white shirt tucked into khakis. He looked like just walked out of a GAP commercial.

“Dan, we need help,” Akash said, assertively.

“Jesus Akash, why do you think I have nothing else to do other than take bribes to do dirty work for you?” I raised my eyebrows. Apparently this wasn’t the first time he’s snooped around for Akash.

“It’s for the company Dan, not for me.”

                Dan groaned. “I’m listening, reluctantly.”

“We need you to trace this IP address,” Akash said, handing him a post-it with numbers on it. “The person using this computer is giving Chester Galveston account information that’s helping them steal clients.”

Dan perked up. “Chester Galveston?! I hate their guts. I don’t even need anything from you, I’ll do it out of the goodness of my heart,” he said, giving me a quick wink.

Akash instantly looked uncomfortable. “Just do it, okay?” He said, pulling me away slowly. What was his issue?

I smiled at Dan and silently thanked him, and soon we were in the elevator again, heading back up to our floor.

The rest of the week went by quickly, and by Friday night, I was having dinner with Akash again, and this time I let him choose the place. Much to my dismay, we ended up at the Ciao Wine Bar.

                “Are you okay? You seem…off.”

“I’m fine,” I assured him. Sitting in this wine bar was unsettling, especially because everything in here reminded me of Jay and our first date.

“Two glasses of your best Shiraz please,” Akash motioned to the waiter.

Shit. Shiraz was Jay’s favorite wine.

Shit. Akash was wearing a nice Hugo Boss navy shirt. Jay was wearing a navy three-piece suit that night.

Shit. Akash was wearing a Rolex. Jay’s favorite watch was a Rolex.

Get your shit together, I told myself.

“…Are you sure you’re okay?” Akash looked legitimately concerned now.
