Hard Truth

Thursday

Today's exam day. Even though I'm not the one taking these exams, I still have a knot in my stomach.

And on top of that problem, Sora is fighting his feelings. I'm afraid he won't do well on his exams if he's distracted by this.

I honestly don't know how to lend him the truth. It's going to be difficult, but there's no other solution.

The class sits in their desk doing their daily chatting and talking. They have another hour until they're sent for exams.

I look in Sora's direction. He's stares down at his desk, not bothered to talk to his friends.

There has to be a way I can talk about this to him. It can't be later. It has to be now.

"Okay, guys. You have 45 minutes left until the bell rings for exams. Please make the most of it and study as much as you need to!"

Half the students took out their books to study while the other half seemed confident enough not to and continue to chat.

45 minutes should give me enough time to talk to Sora. I have no words planned out, but I'll make it work.

I walk to his desk and tap on his hand. He looks at me and looks back down immediately.

I greeted him with a warm smile. "Hi there. Can you come with me for a second so we can chat?"

"No, I can't," he denied. "Just for a little bit," I said. "I won't take up too much of your time, okay?"

He hesitates, then nods 'yes' without making eye contact. Is he afraid of looking at me now?

He gets up and follows me out of the classroom. I knock on the teachers room next door.

She opens the door. "Mornin, Miss Y/n!" She greeted. "Hi! Can you watch my class while I'm gone? I just need a few minutes."

"Of course!" I thank her and leave with Sora behind me. "Where we going?"

"In here," I open an empty classroom that's not too far from ours. "I just want us to talk."

"I already know whatchu wanna talk about," he stated. "Okay, so let's talk about it." I sit on top of the desk.

"Nah..." He fiddles with the curls of his hair. "Okay, so...tell me why. Does it make you uncomfortable?"

He nods and murmurs. "No, just embarrassing." It sounds like he's forming a shell around me.

If I imitate him with questions, it's going to be more difficult for him to open up, so I'll just take it easy.

"That's okay. You know...you shouldn't be ashamed of what you feel, Sora."

He continues to play with his curls without responding. I get off the desk and sit next to him.

"It's not like I wanted to," he sighs. "I just wanted to know how you felt about it...how you felt about me."

It's unusual to see such a hard boiled student including a soft side.

"I think it's normal to have feelings for someone, of course. And I think...well....I don't think of you any less."

He stops playing with his hair and finally meets eyes with me. "So this doesn't make you disappointed? Or...mad?"

"I'm not mad or disappointed. I would never be mad at you for being honest."

He sits back in his chair and stares at the ceiling for a bit, then chuckles. "This love shìt is crazy."
