Fox was okay.
He saw that through his flickering vision, he had saved Fox, and that was all that mattered to him in that moment. He had made his choice and he had done it without regret. He had saved his brother. After all the ones he had lost, he saved one.
The first person to show him the meaning of family.
And everything is worth sacrificing for family. The ones who aren't always related by blood, the ones who are the most important pieces in his broken life, the ones who loved him regardless of his past and chose to be his brothers. The ones who never gave up on him, always believed in him, and inspired him. They were his family.
Then, his body failed him and as his world suddenly tilted sideways, he felt pure terror overthrow his mind when he realized he couldn't get back up. His jaw painfully clicked together from the brutal impact of the hard ground. His strength didn't exist and his wolf was muted in a haze, he wasn't in control of his body anymore.
But just as quickly, a wave of calm washed over him, numbing the pain for a breath of silence that rung in his ears while the world was forgotten. It gave him a moment of clarity. Just enough, that he realized this was it.
He wasn't going to fight anymore.
Suddenly, there were hands on his body. There was pressure applied to his wounds--a futile attempt really--and the fire of pain lit up his body, reminding him he hadn't slipped away just yet. He hissed through his teeth, his vision clearing, and he saw Fox on his knees beside him. He had never seen such horror on Fox's face, sheer white skin contrasting the blood that tainted both their skins.
"You're going to be okay, you'll be okay," Fox was chanting and he could feel the tremor of fear as Fox's hands couldn't stop the blood. "Jesus Christ, why the hell did you do that? You just...why? God damn it, someone get help!" Fox screamed, voice nearly raw from the agony he felt inside. Then, their eyes connected.
He coughed a little, "It's okay, Fox."
"It's not fucking okay!" Fox's eyes glazed with tears of anguish and desperation, "You're dying!"
"It is okay," He reassured, quietly, as if any burst of noise would send his soul fluttering away, but he managed to keep eye contact with his brother, "It's alright, Fox, I am not afraid of dying."
Fox bowed his head, tears dripped from the tip of his nose. He managed to lift a shaking hand to rest on Fox's head, and said, "Please do not mourn me when I am gone, I will be free." His burden, his past, his regret... it wouldn't exist anymore. "I will not feel pain, and I do not want that pain to be transferred to you. My death is not your burden."
