38 - Public Relationship

Shawn.

"Are you sure you don't want to check? Your phone's been buzzing non-stop." My mom asks. After I posted the photo of Elle on Instagram, i just couldn't get myself to check my phone. "Alright I'll check." I give in. I turn my phone on and notice many comments under the post, which was as expected. I read through some of it but there was one in particular that caught my attention, "That looks like Aaliyah's friend." I click on Aaliyah's profile and lo and behold, Aaliyah has posted multiple photos with Elle. My heart starts to pump even louder, Elle's identity is about to be revealed.

My phone pops up a new notification from Hollywood Life's twitter. I click on it and i see my name written in all caps, 'SHAWN MENDES girlfriend reveal turns out to be his sister's friend?' Crap, how are people such good detectives? "Aaliyah?" I call and she looks up at me. I pass her my phone, showing her the tweet and she gasps. "People won't believe it. Will they?" She bites her lower lip. "I hope not." I rub my hands together. "Whats' wrong?" My mom asks. "I posted a photo of Elle's backs and people are putting the pieces together." I tell her, my foot tapping away nervously on the ground. "What are you going to do?" She asks, leaning over to read the tweet on my phone. "It's either i deny them or admit that they're right." I gulp.

Aaliyah passes me the phone back and i call my publicist. I know she's probably going to kill me but what's done been done, and right now i really need her advice. "Shawn, what have you done?" She answers the phone with a harsh tone. Why does she immediately assume that I've done something bad? I mean she's not wrong but still. "I may have posted a photo of Eleanor on Instagram." I confess. "What photo is it?" She sighs, as if she had expected this. "It was a photo of her back , standing in front of a Christmas tree. You couldn't even see her face! I don't know how people found out who she is. And Hollywood Life just tweeted about it, what should i do?" I panic. "I told you before your actions will have consequences and now it's time for you to face them." She tells me and i nod even though she can't see me. "Post a selfie of the three of you together and come clean to your fans. You might lose some of your fans but it shouldn't be too bad if you show them that you're still you." She advices. "Okay, thanks a lot." I smile, feeling slightly more confident. "Merry Christmas Shawn." She wishes me and i do so too before hanging up.

I look through my gallery to find a silly mirror selfie the three of us had taken after my concert in Toronto. "What do you think of this photo?" I show it to Aaliyah. "It's cute. What are you going to do with it?" She asks. "I'm going to post it on Instagram." I try to say as confidently as I can. I quickly type a cute caption before hitting the post button.

Eleanor.

"What the hell is going on?" I mutter under my breath after seeing thousands of Instagram notifications. I click on them and see Shawn has posted a picture of the three of us from his concert and that he tagged me in it. Many people left comments under the post, some saying how they knew we were together and wishing us all the best which was really sweet to read. However, one comment caught my attention.

@shawn4eva: isn't that the girl who steals boyfriends? i bet she stole Shawn too

How does this Shawn fan page know about my history? As much as I try not to let my past affect me, I cant help but think if my reputation is ruining Shawn's. I scroll down his page to find another photo of me posted, a photo I didn't even realise he took and I have to admit its a pretty cute picture. I cant believe Shawn and I's relationship is now public, I just hope everything will be okay even though I know that my bad reputation may just be the cause of Shawn's downfall. But for now, I'll be selfish and embrace how we don't have to hide it anymore.
