Sorry, I don't usually do author's notes so much. This is my first piece of writing in the present tense, and it's hard as hell to remember not to switch tenses, and the storytelling just feels so different. How do you guys think I'm doing? Is it alright? Also, Overhaul is one of the people I was talking about in the previous chapter's author's note. I hate him with a burning passion, but I decided to make him into an interesting and cool character in this story just because.
Kai Chisaki, also known as Overhaul, considers himself a villain. He basically runs a yakuza, for goodness sake, even if he's not the boss yet. He doesn't hate being a villain, either; it's liberating, and a lot less stressful than being a hero. No lives at stake but your own, no laws to follow, no fans to please... and most importantly to him, no 'we're better than them' bullshit.
Heroes throw their opponents in jail. Villains, like Overhaul, don't bother. Overhaul likes the simplicity, and the fact that he upholds his own form of 'justice' doesn't mean anything. So what if the last man he killed had been attempting rape? He was mad, he didn't do it just to save the woman.
If he did, he knew that would make him a lot like Eraserhead, if more brutal. He refused to think that they had anything in common.
No one could prove that he smiled when the woman called him her hero, either; his mask is quite useful for many situations.
As he walks leisurely down a dark road in Musutafu at night, looking for excitement, the man known as the Demon of Shie Hassaikai perks up at the sound of an explosion. It's close, and he can feel a grin itching at the corners of his mouth as he turns toward the smoke. He doesn't run, or even take his hands out of his pockets. It's not like he's a hero, after all. He's just hoping for some entertainment, not rushing into trouble to save lives.
He turns the corner, seeing two pro heroes struggling against a villain he's heard of: Muscular. Honestly, such an uncreative name, but whatever. Sometimes villains don't get to choose their names, so maybe this is just a case of terrified witnesses accidentally naming him? Overhaul hopes so. He'd hate to have to admit that he came up with that name himself.
"Hey, Muscular," Overhaul calls calmly, briefly interrupting the fight. "I haven't met you before now, and I have to take the opportunity to ask a question I've had on my mind. Did you come up with your own villain name?"
Muscular glances back at the two pros, and seeing that they're just as confused as he is, he smirks at Overhaul. "Sure did. Why is a pipsqueak vigilante getting involved in a big hero fight, huh?"
Overhaul tips his head back and laughs. "Oh, no. I'm a villain." The terror in the eyes of the two heroes is pretty amusing when he says that, but they don't have to worry. They don't seem strong enough to bother killing, and Overhaul is pretty sure they're good people. "I go by Overhaul."
Muscular tenses. He must have heard that Shie Hassaikai, with the power of Eri and Kai, the Angel and the Demon, were slowly taking control of all criminal activity in the district. Overhaul starts taking off his gloves.
"So, you're here to threaten me? I'm not joining your gang, and I'm not just gonna leave, either," he said, taking a threatening step forward. Overhaul didn't react other than to start walking forward again, his grin not visible behind his mask.
"I expected as much. If we're at an impasse, I'm afraid I'll have to kill you."
Muscular laughed, his voice booming, before launching himself at Overhaul with terrifying speed. Unfortunately for him, he was up against Overhaul.
Kai held up one hand, almost lazily, and once Muscular's fist connects, he finds that he no longer has an arm; blood splashes in an arc from the stump of his shoulder. Muscular jumps back, his eyes wide with sudden fear, and Overhaul rolls his eyes. "What's wrong? You were talking hot shit earlier. Don't you want to throw another punch?"
