The next day flew around like a flash, and soon enough the two of you were back in the studio, hanging outside the recording booth. It was usually pretty quiet in there when no one else (especially Murdoc) was around. You'd often spend your free time in there eyeing the instruments on the wall, admiring their shape, color, size...and thinking about how maybe one day you'd get 2D to teach you how to play them. He caught you staring up at a smaller, brown acoustic guitar hanging just nearby. It looked plain, but somehow...it didn't feel plain.

"Y'like that one?" He smiled. "Tha' was Noodle's. Y'can see her playin' that one in the Feel Good Inc. video."

"Is that really it?" You tilted your head to the side, analyzing the instrument. You could see the image so clearly in your mind; Noodle, on the floating island, sitting at the very edge, her legs swinging slightly with the breeze...The guitar fit into the picture like a missing puzzle piece.

2D nodded. "'m glad we kept it. It'd been sittin' there gatherin' dust at Kong, y'know, after she..." His voice trailed off sadly, but he shook his head to dismiss the thought and shrugged. "F'some reason Murdoc jus' really wanted to take it wif us here."

"Murdoc?" You turned to look at him. "It was his idea?"

"Well, yeh," he said. "Mostly 'cuz he wanted to teach th' cyborg to play it."

You hummed with disdain, shaking your head. You shifted your attention to the lyric sheets 2D had been showing you previously. They were for the songs you were recording today. It was quite a few pages, since the first song ends up fading into the next one, so really it was more like one continuous song. This is what made them so interesting to you. One song about one subject fades into a completely different one about a completely different subject. You wondered how that was going to work.

"It must have taken quite a long time to write these," you commented, flipping through the pages and scanning them with your eyes.

"'a wouldn' know," 2D replied. "'a didn' write 'em."

"You didn't?" You raised an eyebrow. You thought 2D wrote most of the songs for the band. "Who did, then?"

"Murdoc did." He nodded. "'e wrote all th' ones we've been doin'. 'E won't let me write anythin' cuz he says th' only writing 'e ever wants to see from me is a will."

Your focus faded out towards the end of his sentence as you reflected on what he had just said.

All of the songs that you'd seen so far had such thought-provoking writing, writing that were accessible to the average listener but still very meaningful, lyrics you could dance to without feeling ignorant of the deeper meaning. You didn't think Murdoc was capable of creating such a thing. Admittedly, your expectations of the man were practically below sea level.

Could it really be true?

Before you had any more time to give it thought, the studio door opened calmly, grabbing both of your attention. Three men shuffled inside, looking excited.

"Hey, D!" One of them immediately waved at 2D.

He grinned, waving back with equal excitement. "'ey, Dave!"

When the first man talked, you recognized the voice immediately. Upon glancing at the other two men, it formed a more perfect picture in your mind. "Hey," you said, looking at them. "You're De La Soul!"

"Who told you that?" One of them said sarcastically, smiling at you.

2D looked back at you. "We've known them fo' years. We're all great friends."

Suddenly, another figure came through the doorway, panting when he finally reached the inside of the room. "Am I late?" He had a Welsh accent and curly brown hair. You concluded it had to be Gruff Rhys. You knew that because you faintly remembered hearing at least one of his songs with Super Furry Animals.
