Chapter 3 ~ Her brother
"I said I will go by myself"my demanding roommate said as she scrambled ahead with no care of getting caught.
"Oh yeah go ahead and there-"I pulled her to the adjacent wall to hide against it, when I heard footsteps.
She huffed then saw the warden patrolling in the corridor she closed her eyes whispering, "what are we gonna do?"
I raised my eyebrow at 'we'?
"Just stand here" I told
"Okay! I can do that"
"And don't breathe"
"What!?"
"And also stop talking"
We waited there in the shadows. I peeped to see any signs of anyone else when I was sure there was no one. I moved away from the wall with a finger on my lips, I beckoned her to follow me. Tip toeing, we carefully made our way out from the back gate. I was impressed when she leaped from the fence in one go like she had been doing this from before. Me being short in height had to try second time I really hate that fact, to get me legs on the fence.
I jumped off beside her on the ground while she tapped her foot impatiently.
"I thought you didn't know the way to sneak out?" She asked in a mocking tone.
"And I thought you would go by yourself?" I asked copying her and the way she tilted her head.
This is ridiculous
This was absolutely ridiculous why did I even bother to help her out? It's not like I don't have any other work to do just standing here made my shoulder heavy with the burden of them and instead of doing them, here I was wasting time in something that should be none of my concern.
The girl glanced at me sensing the silence and my reluctance, she rubbed her forehead then literally joined her hands, "I am sorry we started off on the wrong foot, let me introduce myself to you" she dropped one hand and extended the other out," I am Divyanshi you can call me Divya and I am new here, I just came here just ..."
Her face crumbled she fisted her hand to suppress in not to give in to whatever she was feeling, "for my brother, so you have to understand how this is so important to me.."
She gave a small smile continuing
"I won't judge you if you leave me here alone in the dark to find my way to 'Boys' hostel also let's not forget I don't know anything around here so I won't judge you if go back to your room.." she mumbled along the line looking away" that's cruel though...anyway but I won't judge you" she looked at me completing.Oh yeah of course she won't judge me after very clearly judging me
I walked drawing my hands in my sweatshirt,"tell me about your brother"
She covered the distance quickly, getting the sign I wasn't going back.
Just last time
This is the last time I am being Mother Teresa I promised myself, getting to one side of the street.
"My brother ...well he is very cool" she said walking along with me swinging the medicine packet to and fro. "He is just so awesome he never backs away from helping anyone he is so strong" she punched the air saying,"will fight for the right! He's so popular where ever he goes people know him yes he's that charming and oh my goodness you won't believe in our school times every girl like I will write it down for you like each and every girl of his class had a crush on him!"
I meant to say... tell me about his room number or name or any useful information to get him in contact with him before we reach the hostel to find needle in the haystack.
But I didn't stop her because it looked like she didn't want to be interrupted and she appeared so happy talking about him that even I couldn't stop myself from wondering how anyone could look so happy talking about someone they love so much without falling apart?
"He sounds like a player" I said something to be the part of the conversation when in reality I was holding in so many others questions which had nothing to do with her brother.
She looked at me with a little frown, "he was! he said he wants to give everyone a chance to date him"
I smiled couldn't help myself
"Hey you smiled!" She shouted eyeing me weirdly trying to look at me in the dim street lamps.
"Yeah so..." I asked giving her an odd look with warm cheeks.
She reminded me of my best friend back in my hometown. Same bubbly, peppy and getting excited for absolutely anything.
"I have never seen anyone who smiles so less" she replied then immediately continued about her brother's tales, "he makes everyone smile you can't help yourself but smile when he smiles, you can't help yourself but laugh with he laughs he's just the best brother in the world!"
"I thought siblings fight and you know hate each other?" I wondered aloud being the only child I never knew how it was like to have a sibling.
Her face light up and I thought she couldn't be more happy. "Oh of course we fought! We fought so much there's no day when we haven't argued on and mom used to be so done with us and-"her face fell all the brightness of it went out she looked away. "I just miss him it's two years I can't believe it's two years I want to see him -
"Do you know his room number?" I asked when we reached the similar back gate behind a huge building. I hoped to not find the guards if they came to watch over this area too
She shook her head, "I don't know" she said stared down then looked at me through her hair.
This gesture reminded me of someone.
I stared at her as she glanced at me through her hair. Something clicked in the back of my mind.
"What's your brother's name?" I asked suddenly wanted to be wrong, wished that it wasn't what I was thinking.
She eyed me suspiciously, "do you know him?"
"What's his name?" I urged on.
"I can't tell you he will be angry and lately he's been behaving very weird. Dad says he doesn't talk much doesn't answer his calls so you know that's why I have brought this medicines for him to make him right and happy like he was before-
We interrupted by several voices as if they were arguing or fighting.
It was coming from behind the fences
"What is that? what's happening?" Divyanshi asked whispering.
"Let's leave" I said tugging her sleeve but like her personality demanding and stubborn she reached the fence climbing to see what was happening.
I watched her face for her reaction.
As the bullies voices and their torturing sounds got louder.
But my focus was on Divyanshi's face
It was similar to the one I had on that day.Color drained, her eyes struggling to close them to what was happening or to open and face what's the reality. Her head turned to me with glassy eyes she said, "... my brother" and with that she jumped off the other side of the fence.
That's where I got the difference instead of running away from it she went head on to face it.
