No one says a word as we make our way back to the tomb. Edmund and I are now on foot walking with everyone else. We haven't let go of each other's hand since we got off the griffin. I think he just needed the comfort. Or maybe he feels the warm, happy feeling I feel with his hand in mine. We finally get back to the tomb. I see Lucy running out to see us.
"What happened?" She asks after seeing we have less people with us.
"Ask him."
"Peter." Susan tries to stop the fight before it is one.
"Me? You could've called it off there was still time."
"No there wasn't thanks to you. If you'd kept to the plan, those soldiers might be alive right now."
"And, if you'd just stayed here like I suggested, or if you'd listen to what Verity suggested they definitely would be! But no, you're King, right? What you says goes."
"You called us, remember?"
"My first mistake."
"No. Your first mistake was thinking you could lead these people."
"Hey! I am not the one who abandoned Narnia."
"You invaded Narnia. You have no more right to it than Miraz does! You, him, your father... Narnia's better off without the lot of you!"
They both draw their swords.
"Stop it!" Edmund yells. We look over to see Glenstorm setting down Trumpkin. Lucy runs over and gives him a drop from her cordial. He opens his eyes.
"What are you all standing around for? The Telmarines will be here soon enough." Lucy smiles at Trumpkin's remark. "Thank you, my dear little friend."
Caspian storms off we and all go our separate ways to mourn the deaths of the ones we lost last night. I walk over to sit under a tree. All I can think about is the faces of the ones we lost. They fought until their dying breath. They died trying like they said they would. Everyone is supposed to live a full life then die. I feel a tear running down my face, I quickly wipe it away. Edmund sits down next to me. We sit in a comfortable silence until I decide to speak out.
"How do you deal?"
"With what?"
"Death."
"There is no right way to deal with death. But I guess I deal with it by making sure the reason they died is followed through."
"What do you mean by that?"
"They died fighting with a plan for change, right?"
"Right."
"So we must follow through with that plan. If we give up, then they died for nothing. We have to make sure their deaths mean something."
"Make sense."
We fall into another comfortable silence. I think back to my own world. I think of the war that's happening right now. How would I deal with the deaths of my best friends? I know the professors and some parents hide the fact, but I know they are terrified for the fate of the world. It's hard to think that people die at the hands of such evil people. Edmund nudges me pulling me out of my thoughts. I look to him.
"You know I can tell there's something else that's going on with you."
"What makes you say that?"
"The fact that you weren't listening to a word I have been saying just now."
"Hey I was listening."
"Really? Then what did I say."
"That we... may have lost the battle but we will win the war?"
"Not even close."
"Fine. I wasn't listening."
"It's alright, you can make it up to me by telling me what's going on in that pretty head of yours."
"You think my head is pretty?"
"You're avoiding the question."
"You didn't ask a question."
"Verity."
"That's my name, don't wear it out."
"Tell me. Bottling it up will never help."
"Okay. Back in my world there's a war going on. But it's not like a normal war where you fight battles until one side wins."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean there is one side that continues to make attacks that we just aren't ready for. We are being told to wait for a prophecy, but we don't know when that will play out. As much as I would like to tell you all about it there are too many factors that play into it and I'm not sure about it. But my point is that I'm terrified. When I graduate maybe even before, I will help fight this battle against him and his Death Eaters."
"By the name 'Death Eaters' I'm going to assume you're fighting for a good change."
"I'm fighting against intolerance."
"Edmund! Verity!"
We both turn to see Peter running towards us.
"What?"
"Come quickly Caspian is in trouble." We run back to the tomb as fast as we can. We see a woman trapped in an ice wall. "STOP!"
3rd POV
Peter, Edmund, and Verity run into the room and draw their swords. The werewolf crawls over the Stone Table and attacks. Nikabrik and Verity swordfight. The hag knocks Peter's sword out of his hand. Edmund swings at the werewolf. The werewolf howls at the pain. Nikabrik stands over Verity, but Lucy comes up and puts her dagger to Nikabrik's throat. Nikabrik twists Lucy's arm around and throws her to the floor. Peter kicks the hag into a pillar, and she falls. Edmund runs away, turns back, and hits the werewolf. Nikabrik looks at Lucy and hesitates, but it's because Trumpkin stabs him in the back. The Witch keeps reaching towards Caspian. Peter pushes Caspian away and points his sword at the Witch.
"Get away from him!"
"Peter dear... I have missed you. Come, just one drop. You know you can't do this alone."
Peter hesitates, and then lowers his sword a little. Then the Witch inhales deeply, and the ice wall shatters. Edmund stands behind with his sword still drawn.
"I know you had it sorted."
Everyone stands still for a moment. Verity notices how Peter looks displeased with himself as Edmund said those simple words. Edmund walks away grabbing Verity's hand on his way out. Peter and Caspian look at the carving of Aslan that was no longer hidden behind a wall of ice. They look back and see Susan, she scolds them both for a moment before walking out.
