Chapter 16 | Mal

"So, what's our play?" Questioned Jesper.

"We wait!" Kaz exclaimed.

"For what?"

"For whatever the general has planned." Answered Kaz as he looked at Inej beside him while I tried to control my breathing due to the corset, still seated on the bench.

"You figured him out?" Jesper huffed.

"Not quite. Consider this scenario, the sun Summoner fled from his palace..." Kaz started as I stood up to stand in front of him and Jesper.
"Now she's tied to the deck. We're sailing for a city where another Ravkan general hired Arken to kill her." He continued as he looked me dead in the eyes.
"And I saw his face when he boarded, I know that look." I watched Inej walk past me from the corner of my eye.
"He's a man consumed with vengeance," Kaz added causing me to huff.

"See it enough in the mirror, do you?" Jesper asked Kaz as I looked from one of them to the other.
"So, what kind of revenge is he planning, exactly?"

"We know he requires the Sun Summoner, which makes her valuable to us."
Kaz explained while looking back at me.
"She's the one keeping everyone safe in here. If we have control of her, then we have the shots!" Kaz paused for a moment as he glanced up the roof. "We need to threaten her life!"

"What?" Inej and a man exclaimed from behind causing me to spin around in fright.
Jesper pulled out his pistol and pointed it at the man while my eyes grew wide when I recognized the man Inej held a gun up to his head.

"You!" I mumbled aggressively.

"Who's this?" Jesper questioned as he looked down at me and back up at the stranger.
"Who are you?"

"A stowaway!" Inej answered.
"Why pick this of all skiffs?" She asked the tracker as she pushed the barrel against his skull while he and I kept eye contact.

"To kill the general and save Alina!" He exclaimed while reverting his eyes to Jesper and Kaz behind me.

"I'll ask again." Jesper hissed while cocking his pistol causing my hand to fly my hand back and grab his bicep.

"Don't!" I whispered so only him and Kaz would hear me.

"Who are you?" Jesper asked as he lowered his gun.

"Mal Oretsev." He answered.
I walked to stand inches away from him as I peered into his eyes.

"You know Alina?" Kaz asked as he and Jesper followed me closer to Mal.

"I do," Mal answered as he tilted his head down to look at me.

"Who's in control of her?" Asked Kaz as he glared at Mal.

"The general I'm going to kill!" He hissed before reverting his eyes to Kaz.

"Inej, give him his gun!" Exclaimed Kaz.

"Why?"

"Because if he isn't with Kirigan's crew he's with ours!" I exclaimed while stepping away from Mal and accidentally colliding with Kaz's shoulder.

30 minutes later

"What's he doing?" Inej mumbled in panic.

"Shh." Kaz shushed as we all glared throw the cracks in the ceiling.

"One more demonstration!" Kirigan shouted from above us causing my heart to start pounding.
"You've seen what the Sun Summoner can do." He spoke while walking back and forth on the deck of the ship.
"Now bear witness to what I can do...with her power."
