(Percy POV)

Meeting the parents was always hard, but this one was going to be a train wreck.

First of all, we weren't going to do something normal like have dinner or go to a restaurant. We were going to an opera. A freaking opera.

Second of all, this was Annabeth. Meaning I couldn't screw this up.

"Are you sure we can't do something else?"

"Percy, the opera starts in 30 minutes."

"I know, but it's 3 hours! My ADHD brain can't focus for that long!"

Annabeth rolled her eyes. "Look Percy. I tried to convince my dad to do something else. He said no. Let's just look at the bright side and get through this."

"Bright side? What bright side?"

"If you get past a 3 hour opera without complaining, my dad's gonna be really impressed."

I hated how right she was. I mulled the plan over as we got into the car. Get through the opera. Impress Annabeth's dad.

Seems easy, right? Well, nothing ever comes easy for me.

"Hello, Percy." Annabeth's dad put out his arm.

"Hi, Mr. Chase." I shook his hand.

We'd met before, once when I was saving Annabeth from the weight of the sky and another time during the Battle of Manhattan. But Annabeth and I were just friends then; today was a completely different dynamic. And I could just tell by the way Frederick was glaring at me from the corner of his eye that he was enjoying this as much as I was.

"So..." I ventured, "What's this opera about?"

Mr. Chase perked up at that. "It's a beautiful fusion between old customs and modern technology. It depicts the modernization and complete discovery of transportation in the military. All while told in song!"

My eyelids nearly dropped to the floor.

How could I have forgotten Mr. Chase's obsession with military history? He'd even shown up to save Annabeth in a plane he built. Wait. Conversation starter!

"Any new planes you've been working on?"

Mr. Chase's face lit up. "Yes, In fact! I'm working on an altered version of the Sopwith's Camel. I installed new wings with a curvature midsection..."

He went on and on, talking about changing this part and altering that wing and replacing this engine...Annabeth caught my eyes and gave me an encouraging smile. I weakly smiled back.

A short blond woman who looked to be in her 20s greeted us at the door. "Everyone follow me this way to Transportation through the Ages." Mr. Chase nearly skipped in her direction; he was so excited for this. Just another reminder to not screw this up.

"There's not many people here," Annabeth remarked.

"Yeah probably 'cuz it's an opera about transportation."

The two Chases threw me a disapproving glare.

The small audience made it easy to find our seats. Mr. Chase and I were on either side of Annabeth. "Remember," she whispered to me, "only 3 hours, and then we're out of here."

I nodded, but the nervous pit in my stomach stayed. This was going to be a long night.

(Annabeth POV)

30ish minutes went by and I could already tell Percy couldn't stand it. He sat on my right with a frown, eyes drooping like a dejected puppy. I nearly snorted with laughter looking at his face. But to be fair, I was starting to get bored too. One can only endure a certain number of vocal numbers before they go insane.

Dad, on the other hand, was having the time of his life. His eyes were so glued to the stage, a perpetual smile etched onto his face. It was nice seeing him so happy.

Suddenly, Percy's fingers brushed across mine, his face grinning mischievously. He locked his hand in mine and slowly rubbed his thumb on the back of my palm. I rolled my eyes.

"Couldn't even resist me for 30 minutes?" I whispered.

He smirked and lowered his hand to my leg. He slid his thumb under the slit of my dress and rubbed small circles on my thigh. I felt my face heat up, but I looked away so he wouldn't see.

"Percy-what are you doing?!?" Dad tore his eyes from the stage and glared at Percy with a heat that could ignite a thousand fires.

"Uhm..."

(In the car)

"I think that went exceptionally well."

"Don't even start, Percy." I glared at him, eyes flashing.

And we both burst into laughter.

Percy clutched his sides and fell onto the dashboard. I was laughing so hard tears formed in my eyes.

"We are never going to an opera again," I managed through wheezes.

"You can say that again."

And we both burst into another fit of giggles.
