"Let's stop here." Annabeth pointed to a cavern on their left. It was partially closed, brown rocks forming a U, so it would stay relatively warm in the night.

"Good idea." Percy limped into the circle and Annabeth sank to the floor. In her haze, she forgot to get ambrosia out of her backpack.

"Percy could you get me-"

"Already on it." Percy was digging through her backpack, trying to find the packet.

Percy's hand reached something soft. Puzzled, he reached down deeper. "Hey Annabeth-what's this?" Percy pulled out a beat-up brown teddy bear.

Annabeth turned 10 shades of crimson. She hid it at the very bottom! How did he find it? "That...um...that's a younger camper's bear! Yeah. One of the younger campers."

Percy frowned. "Then why do you have it with you?"

"Uhm...well...she asked me to find it 'cuz she lost it and then I found it but I forgot to give it back and then we were called on the quest so I've just been keeping it in my bag until-"

"Annabeth, is this yours?" Percy asked softly.

Annabeth stared into his green eyes: there was no scorn in them, just a want for the truth. She loved how she could tell Percy's emotions just by his eyes: when they darkened, he was angry or being protective. When he was concentrating, the blue in his eyes sharpened. But this color was her favorite. It was a beautiful sea-green that reminded her of the ocean. This color was almost dream-like, very fitting since she'd indulged in many dreams about his eyes. Somehow, she felt deep down that this eye color was just meant for her...

"Annabeth...?"

Annabeth snapped out of her reverie, forced to face the teddy bear.

Percy reached out and took her hand in his. "You don't have to tell me if you don't want to. It's nothing to be ashamed of."

Annabeth sunk to the ground and rested her head against the cavern wall; Percy did the same. Do I tell him? It's not that she didn't trust Percy; she could put her life in his hands in a heartbeat. But there was something stopping her from opening up this bit of her life. This teddy bear had been the only thing that stayed with her throughout her painful childhood; only her father knew about this bear. She didn't know if she wanted to include another person. She looked at him once again, and made her decision.

"On my 4th birthday, my dad gave me this bear." Percy turned to her, his eyes locked on her face. Annabeth looked at the ground and continued, "It was around the time my Athena side started becoming stronger. I was crazy afraid of spiders. Like 100 times more than I am now. My dad gave me this and told me it would protect me from the spiders. So whenever I got nightmares or the spiders came, I held this bear. It made me feel...safe. It wasn't really the bear, but more like the memory of my dad associated with it. Whenever I see it...it reminds me of a time when I was welcome. When he loved me."

"He does love you Annabeth!" Percy croaked out.

"Then why did he treat me like a freak!?" She spat out the last word furiously.

"Annabeth, I promise you: your dad loves you as much as I do." Percy's face flushed pink as soon as the words left his mouth.

Annabeth's eyes widened. She continued quickly before she did something stupid, like blush."I try to keep my life in three parts. My life with my dad before my stepmom; my life on the run with Luke and Thalia; and my life now...with you." Percy felt his heart quicken its pace. Annabeth continued, "I've learned before that when I mix those three parts, everything goes haywire. But, Percy, when you came, I had no choice. I had to mix the three parts. You met my dad when you were saving me from Atlas. You met Luke and he betrayed you. He betrayed me too. And then, Thalia came back from the dead because of you.

Percy gulped. He could feel the tension in the air, palpable and closing in.

"And somehow..." Tears pooled in Annabeth's eyes. "Somehow, I don't regret it. Because Percy, you-you are the best thing that has ever happened to me."

Percy felt his heart quicken its pace. He cupped her face with his calloused hand and wiped her tears away with his thumb. Annabeth held his wrist and looked into his unwavering eyes. When Percy looked at her like that, she was completely useless. Forget hubris, those green eyes were her fatal flaw!

But then...the moment passed. Percy dropped his hand and stared away. Annabeth's eyes welled up again. She wanted to feel him. She craved his touch. Holding her teddy bear in one hand, she inched her other hand closer to Percy until it brushed his fingers. Percy hesitated-then locked her hand in his.

Tomorrow, they would be back on the quest. Tomorrow, their lives would be in jeopardy. Tomorrow they would be just friends. But today, they were something more.
