A Son and his Mother

One day, a Son and his Mother

Saw a man in the streets,

Freezing and starving,

At the brink of death.

The Mother gave him

The only morsel of food

They had with them.

The Son stopped her,

And said,

"We are ourselves knee-deep

In a whirlpool of poverty.

How, Mother,

Can you give away

The last of our food to him,

A stranger, not even our blood."

The Mother replied,

"Oh my child,

Never despair

in the face of grief.

Never back down

From a fair fight.

Never turn your

Face against what is right.

And never, ever

Avert your eyes from

Those in need like you.

Helping them might not

Bring us wealth,

But it will give me comfort

In knowing that

I did something right

In this wrong world.

Help someone in need today

So that he might

Return the favor to

Someone else someday.

If we don't show

Kindness to others in need,

Do you think

We'll deserve that

Kindness in return?"
