Irene Adler is actually married to a woman named Godfreya Norton (her parents liked Norse names). Her wife doesn't really mind what kind of job Irene has, as long as Irene and Norton doesn't talk about Irene's job in public. Having a domatrix as a wife can destroy Godfreya's career as a lawyer, because it's possible that her clients could become Irene's, and a if a court of law finds out, they could say it's a form of bribery.
