I slapped Marry as hard as I could. She grabbed her cheek and Henry ran to her.
"Stop it! Do you want to get eaten alive or do you want to live?" I asked.
"Katie, shut up! Marry is scared just like the rest of us. Stop being so selfish!" Henry shouted.
"Fuck you! I want to live. I'm not going to die because of you. I was nice enough to come get you this time. I usually work solo but no.....I risked my life by saving your asses." I shouted.
Henry was about to say something when the door gave a loud snap. We all looked at it and saw that the nail to the door had come off. We only had a minute left before the door collapsed. Matt didn't wast any time. He slammed opened the window and quickly climbed out. He hung onto the tree that hovered dangerously high from the big pool of blood that was forming on the cement. Henry climbed out next.
"Come on Marry. Your turn." I said, leaning out the window.
"I told you. No way! I'll stay here." She said, turning away.
"Marry....get your big fat ass over here now!" I shouted.
Marry was about to argue when the door fell. The group of zombies stood there for a moment. We all looked at the door then at them. It was quiet until one of them roared and Marry dove for the window. I grabbed her by the waist, even though I didn't want to take her with us, and was about to jump when something grabbed my foot. I kicked the zombie off and jumped out the window. Marry screamed loudly as we fell....missing the branch. We were falling towards the cement, the other weak branches snapping under our weight and scratching us. I had to do everything for us. I grabbed the next branch and swung my legs until I was on it. Marry screamed like she was on fire. I made a note to leave her next time. We climbed up the branches and sat next to Matt and Henry. Marry had calmed down a bit and stopped screaming. I watched as a big group of zombies came out from the school and began clawing at the tree we were in.
"See? If we had left with everyone who tried to evacuate we would be under there with them." I said, leaning back.
"You mean....they were all bitten?" Matt asked.
"They tried to go out the back door. It was covered down the big alley with zombies. I think they opened and one of them got bitten. They closed it and then the bite must have spread quickly for it to spread in a matter of minutes." I said.
"Um..Hello. Little Miss smarty pants, how are we going to go if we're trapped? It's getting dark out and we have no place to go." Marry said.
"We don't get down. We sleep up here until the sun comes up. The zombies will have given up by then." I said.
"Sleep? Up here? With those..those things under us? You're crazy! No way. What if we fall? What if one of those gets up here?" Marry asked.
"Fine, first of all, they can't climb. So, Marry if you want to sleep on the floor down there go right ahead. Tell us when one of them eats you alive by screaming." I replied, getting up and going up to another branch.
"I hate you." Marry muttered.
"Right back at you." I said.
We all sat still. Marry looked like a piece of wood. She sat perfectly still in the tree like she was scared if she moved, she would fall. I felt bad for her but then I remembered what she took away from me. She didn't deserve my sympathy. One by one, the zombies walked away. The moon looked red today. I sighed and hugged my knees closer to my chest. Henry was asleep, holding Marry's hand. She was leaning against him and I felt my heart sink. I looked over at Matt. He was asleep and didn't snore....like Marry. I sat there wide awake as the stars glittered. I looked at them, trying to find the constellations but they just looked like stars. I closed my eyes and thought about my dad."Katie, don't you see it?" Dad asked, pointing up at the stars.
"Daddy, there just stars. I don't see it." I said, pulling at my short black hair.
"No imagination what so ever." Dad teased.
I giggled as he tickled me. Mom came out and smiled at me. Her blue eyes sparkling. The phone rang and she ran to answer it. Dad smiled at me and tried to get me to see the constellation but I couldn't.
"Ricky, may I talk to you?" Mom asked dad.
"Sure, just a minutes." Dad said, laughing.
"Ricky, now. It was....The Phone Call." Mom said, frowning.
Dad got up and went inside. I peeked in through the kitchen window and had to use my tip toes.
"Ricky, we don't have a choice right now." Mom said.
"Sarah, what about Katie? We can't leave her alone. She's only seven." Dad said.
"God dammit, Ricky. You want to take her with us? She can get killed." Mom said.
"Sarah, we can't leave her here. She needs to be trained to kill those son of a bitches." Dad said.
"Ricky, she's seven. She can't see freaking star constellations. She's nothing but a lousy daughter that can't do anything right. What makes you think she can handle a zombie?" Mom asked.
My heart sank as they began to argue. I ran back to my sleeping bag and curled up into a ball. Mom and dad would be leaving. To fight zombies? Zombies aren't real though. I looked up at the stars again and heard mom's words echo in my head. I squinted and tried looking harder. I still couldn't see them.
"I'm not a lousy daughter. I'm a good girl." I whispered and cried myself to sleep."Katie, wake up." Matt whispered and shook me.
My eyes shot opened and my head shot up, hitting him in the face.
"Sorry, don't ever do that. What time is it?" I asked, rubbing my head.
"Time to go. The sun just barely got up too." Matt said, holding his nose.
"I...I didn't break your nose or anything right?" I asked, blushing.
"No, I'm good. It just hurt like hell." Matt said, smiling.
I carefully pulled myself up and peeked at the floor. No zombies there. By the looks of it, they weren't coming out of the school either. I grabbed my bloody baseball bat and and carefully climbed down. Henry was looking at the sun rise. I stopped and looked at him. His black hair was perfect against his skin. I took my eyes off of him and climbed down again. As soon as my feet hit the ground, everyone else climbed down. I had my baseball bat ready if anything tried to get us. Matt came down first and then Henry. Marry took her sweet time and even complained that her feet still hurt from her fall.
"If they hurt then go climb back up while we go. You wont have to worry about running or struggling to get away." I said and smiled.
She stuck her tongue out at me and marched away. She had just rounded the corner when she let out a scream.
"God, she can't do anything right!" I exclaimed and ran.
Marry was on the floor and one of the science teacher's was snapping his big black teeth at her. She was crying and holding him off with her arms.
"Please! Katie, help me!" She begged.
"Why should I? You took him away from me. I should leave you here to die and rot." I said, gripping the baseball bat.
"Katie, I'm sorry. Just help me please!" she shouted as the man got closer.
"God dammit! Marry, close your eyes!" I shouted and swung the bat.
The head bounced off and blood shot everywhere. Marry's shirt was painted red but none of it got on her.
"Did he bite you?" I asked, helping her up.
She shook her head and walked back to Henry. I sighed and walked ahead of them. Marry was still crying and making us wait for her. She walked slower than a zombie. I made my way to the corner of the school and peered at the gate. There stood about seven to ten zombies.
"Matt, get Henry and Marry. See that tree near the front gate? Climb it quickly while I distract the zombies." I said, and ran out into the clear view.
The zombies were banging their big bodies into the gate. One zombies's hand was bright pink. Skin was dangling off of it.
"Hey, poo poo brains! Come here! Look. I have a fresh new brain just waiting to get a bite out of it." I shouted, slamming my baseball bat against the bike rack.
The echo rang loudly and all the zombies turned around. I ran and I could hear their feet pounding against the floor. I turned around and saw them on the wall that near the gate and I ran across. I jumped and was barely able to climb the wall when a hand grabbed me. I kicked it off and stood still. They all began to claw at us. I looked down the empty street and climbed down. Matt jumped off and gripped his legs. Guess the same thing happened to him.
"Pain?" I asked, laughing.
"Yeah. So, now what?" Matt asked.
"We walk. We need to find out how to get out of here. We need to watch each others back." I said, walking down the street.
"What? Aren't there more zombies out here then in the school?" Marry asked.
"Wow, you really are a smart girl." I said, petting her.
"I'm not your dog!" she hissed.
I shrugged and kept walking. I walked up the big hill and could see the road. Cars were crashed together, blood was forming around a specific car.
"Where are you going?" Marry asked.
I stopped and looked at them. I smirked and put my hands on my hips.
"I want to live. I'm going to find a way out of this dump. If you want to live the follow me but if you want to die and give up, stay." I said, and walked towards our doom.
