Prologue First Part

The waiting room was silent. Oliver sat in the hospital chair, his head in his hands. Guilt and sadness were coursing through his veins.

If only he'd come home sooner. His wife would not be lying lifeless on a hospital bed while doctors attempt to resuscitate her. He wouldn't have to go home to their children and tell them that their mother was no longer with them.

As all of these thoughts ran through his mind, he burst into tears. He was never the type to let others see him cry or be weak in any way, but this pain was unlike any other.

His soulmate, lover, better half, and mother of his children was leaving this world, and there was nothing he could do about it.

Oliver didn't notice the doctor approaching him as he let out more heartbreaking cries. The information he was about to receive would leave him scarred for life.

"Mr. Raines?"

Oliver lifted his head, quickly wiping away the hot tears that streamed down his face. "Is she all right? Please tell me she's fine." He inquired, his voice raspy.

Before the doctor spoke, there was a brief moment of silence. "I'm sorry, Mr. Raines, but she did not make it. We did everything in our power-"

He was about to continue when a chair was thrown across the room. Oliver had risen from his seat, his chest pounding and tears streaming down his cheeks. He yanked at his now-messy hair before returning his gaze to the shocked doctor. "You said she was going to make it. You're a fucking liar. Why? Why?" He collapsed to the ground, his body in agony.

As his breathing became more difficult, he continued to sob. The concerned doctor approached Oliver, who was lying on the floor.

"Hey, Mr. Raines, could you please track my breathing?"

Oliver couldn't respond because his throat was closing. As his eyes began to shut, the doctor repeatedly called out his name. He tried to respond, but the darkness swallowed him up.
