I'd never paid much attention to state lines or geographical location, not in a long time.
Ever since that hideous fire that had torn through my body, leaving me a pile of ashes on the inside, I'd been running away.
I'd always been running away.
After an argument with my father, Charlie, I'd got in my Chevy truck he'd given me as a gift when I'd moved from Arizona, where I'd lived with my mom, to Forks, Washington, where I was born. The truck, despite being new during the fifties, was stable and sturdy, and I'd loved it.
But with no sense of direction, the truck soon broke down and I was forced to hitchhike further away from Charlie.
I was picked up about an hour after my truck broke down by a large lorry that was housing around nine Mexican immigrants. They shared water and bread with me. I thanked them in my limited knowledge of Spanish, and I curled up in a pile of old blankets, while the Mexicans sat in silence.
That's when it happened.
A thump in the back of the lorry told me something was wrong - suffering from a troubled sleep, I awoke and saw a stranger, a man as white as fresh snow. The Mexicans were sleeping, and as I poked my head up from the cocoon of blankets, he struck.
I jumped up to pull him off Janez, the kind old man who had shared his water. The white man knocked me back and I flew backwards to hit the otherside of the lorry, and felt a sickening crunch as the metal came into contact with my head. I slid to the bottom, and then the Mexicans began to scream.
The man dropped Janez, pale and empty of blood, and moved onto a middle aged woman with a white dress on. Even through my blurry eyes, I saw the man bite her neck, the blood dribble onto her clothing, her face grow paler as her blood was... And then, the only conclusion I could come to was that this attacker was a vampire. He dropped the woman and moved onto a hysteric young woman who had been trying to claw the lorry's doors open.
I blacked out for several moments, and when I'd awoken, the last screams were being broken off, as a teenage girl, much like myself, was dropped like a stone, and the blood drinker stepped towards me.
He put his bare foot on my face to look at my injury.
He made a tutting sound. 'Very unlikely this one will survive now.. However..' He leaned in towards me, and I could smell him - he smelled like flowers and blood. 'You smell too damn good to not sample...'
And with that, he lowered his head and enclosed his teeth in my throat. I closed my eyes, and was ready to embrace death.
I could feel the blood being drained from my body. It began to burn, immobilising me. I wanted to scream, but I knew this would be no use. The burning sensation continued, and I assumed that I'd died. I felt the blood drinker move away, and giving me a swift quick to my ribs, which I felt crack, he'd gone.
The pain was bewildering. I kept quiet, though inside I was screaming. I never thought dying would feel this way. It was supposed to be peaceful, easy. But then, how many people died through vampire attacks?
If I gave it any thought, probably hundreds everyday. But not many would have been left alone to die.
The fire burned on, and I assumed a fetal position, waiting for Death to welcome me and allow me to escape this.
Minutes, days, weeks passed. And then I was aware of two things - the fire was fading in certain places, such as the tips of my fingers and toes. The second thing was that with the fading of this fire, my heart began to blaze hotter. My breath became short, sharp gasps, while the fire began to gather in my heart, the combined blaze from my limbs causing my heart to pump faster, trying to fight the burning away.
