I was correct in my assumption that the Volturi are the 'vamp cops' - an ancient family who created the laws that we immortals must abide by today.
I thought I'd adjusted well to vampire life. I honestly thought I had.
But now, all this? Rules to abide by, people to follow.. Where is all the freedom I'd relished in the beginning?
It's nothing, it was an illusion. Nothing comes without it's price.
I'm so shocked that I don't hear someone coming until they're right beside me. The person touches my shoulder - the zing of electricity tells me it's Edward.
'I know this is all very new.'
I stand up and face him. 'No, you don't. You had this explained to you as soon as you joined this world. I feel like I've spent the best part of a century living a lie.'
Edward looks at me sadly. 'Please, Bella. Come back inside.'
'No, Edward!' I shout, and wheel around to face away from him. 'You don't get it! I became an immortal, believing myself to be a monster... But I loved it. I love the freedom, the possibilities... But now, now you tell me that everything I believed was good about this life isn't true?' I whirl around to face him. 'What does that leave me, now the freedoms are gone, the possibilites prohibited?'
Edward looks pained, and doesn't say a word.
'Nothing. Exactly.' I close my eyes and turn away from him. 'I've lost everything Edward, and I don't know what else I can do.'
Edward sighs. 'You can join my family.'
I whip around once more. 'What?'
'I said you can join my family.' Edward says. 'It may not be freedom, but it's sure open to possibilities.'
I frown, and he continues.
'Abstaining from human blood allows us to mix with modern society. We all have degrees in something or other. We go to college, we go to school, we travel.'
I sniff. 'Why are you offering me this?'
Edward steps closer to me. 'Both you and I know you don't want this. The look on your face when Esme told you that we're not monsters.. You looked utterly appalled with yourself.'
Edward reaches out and takes my hands, his long white fingers encasing mine. His skin feels smooth, yet hard - like thick silk across stone.
'Bella, think about what this life could offer you.'
I look into his eyes, and for the first time in my immortal life, I want to be kissed.
Dammit Bella, what are you doing?
I spring back from Edward.
'Look. I don't know if a life of drinking animal blood is for me.'
Edward smiles. 'Think of it as... Preserving human life. Choosing to not be a monster.'
I close my eyes and consider. Could I do this? Move in with these people and become a golden-eyed vampire?
How many other golden eyes are there? Is it a popular choice among the vampire community?
Every other vampire I've encountered has had red or black eyes. So it can't be very common.
'We can try it, on a semi permanent basis if you wish.'
I close my eyes again. Should I?
I feel Edward flit in front of me, and his breath is on my face. Mm.. That smells tempting.
My eyes snap open before I do something stupid like kiss him.
'You can always leave, after a few months or so, if it isn't for you.'
Looking at him, I make my decision quickly.
Looking at his lips, I briefly wonder again what they feel like before I nod my assent.
Alice comes out of the house, screaming happily.
Edward leans forward and whispers, 'you just made her decade.'
I'm about to snap something sarcastic, but I'm almost knocked over by Alice's enthusiastic hug.
'...you should see your room... I've packed it full of the latest fashions, and Edward suggested books...'
She drags me to the house again, and I glance at Edward, who is wearing a look that is both apologetic and amused.
He is going to pay for this, I decide.
