Chapter Three

Edward Cullen.

That name rang a bell. Dimly, I remembered Jessica Stanley, the first female friend I'd made in Forks High School, telling me about the Cullens the first lunch time I'd spent there. I'd been in awe of them, the two females and three males, all of them misfits, all of them beautiful. Jessica had finished her description of Edward with a very bitter and resentful tone - he didn't date. Assuming he was gay, I never spoke to him unless it was required in biology.

I'd never given him another moments thought.

The Cullens? Vampires?

This made sense. They didn't turn up when it was sunny, Edward never showed up to that biology lesson where we tested blood, none of them participated in physical education, they were all beautiful.

I register the fact that I remembered these things about Edward. I must have taken more notice than I realised.

Mentally shaking myself, I frown at him.

'Why have you been keeping an eye on me?'

Edward smiles, a crooked smile that almost weakens my resolve. Dang, he's gorgeous. Well, at least I know I'll be like this indefinitely. No aging. Not that I've changed in eighty years, but this guy is probably over a century old.

'Well, Bella.' Edward says. 'I'm sure, if you came to meet my family, it'd be easier to explain.'

I don't like this suggestion.

'How about you explain it to me now?' I say, unafraid. Despite him being bigger than me, as a vampire, I learned to stand up for myself and allow nobody to treat me like their doormat.

Edward sighs. 'When you went missing, everybody assumed the worst. However, my sister Alice is able to see the future-'

'Wait, what?' I say. See the future? What?!

Edward sighs again. 'I told you it'd be easier to explain with my family present.'

I shake my head. 'No, go on.'

Edward raises his brows and continues. 'Well, my sister had a vision of you waking up, alone and a newborn vampire.'

A newborn? That's a way of putting it.

Alice.. The little black haired one? Wow. A psychic. Go figure.

So vampires could get gifts? That one I didn't know about. Did Edward have a gift, or any of his other siblings? Did I have a gift?

I almost snort. I would have noticed by now if I could do something awesome and abnormal.

Edward's still talking. 'We tried to look for you, but by that time you'd headed east. We lost your scent at an airport, and assumed you'd caught a plane.'

I nod. 'Yes. I hid in Scotland for a few months before I ran to Russia. I assumed the sun would kill me, so I went somewhere cold and wet.'

'You're very practical.' Edward nods his approval. 'However, as Alice's visions are subjective, we were unable to determine a fixed future for you. We theorised that you made rash decisions based on your needs. It was sensible of you to reside in wet climates, even under the wrong impression.'

I glare at him as he smirks mockingly.

'I was young and I didn't believe in all that shit.' I say, adding venom.

Edward's eyes tighten, and seems to poise himself.

'Either way, it was very practical. However, it seemed to us like you had disappeared from the edge of the Earth. Alice was no longer able to see you clearly, and after a while, she couldn't see you at all.'
