Before my immortalisation, I'd never given a second thought to vampires. I'd watched horror films - some nights I'd quiver under my duvet, afraid that some monster would sneak its way into my bedroom and devour my soul - but as I grew older, creatures of the night became less significant in my nightmares, nothing I ever spent hours pondering aimlessly about.
However, once I'd learned to control myself, I developed a newfound interest in the myths I'd never deeply considered. Stealing books and hiding in the corners of libraries - the latter very rare, depending on how thirsty I was - and delved right into a world I'd completely ignored.
With thoughts of Edward's lips at the back of my mind, I begin to set up my laptop. I bring up the memories of my research - the myths mainly centering on the religious superstitions of the earliest centuries. I shook my head, smirking - how foolish could they have been to try to detect and destroy a real vampire? I mentally shuddered, remembering the Volturi - perhaps the myths were more accurate than I believed.
Sighing, I began to write an introduction.
Vampires that inhabit the actual world are all originally human. As vampires, we retain a close physical resemblance to our human form, the only noticable differences being a universal pallor of skin, a change in eye colour, and heightened beauty. The oldest record of vampires
And suddenly, I find myself unable to write anymore. Writing about these Volturi people is almost as bad as admitting they're real. I shake my head. I have to get out. Again.
Alice flits into my room.
'Don't go thinking you can just do a bunk again.'
I stand up, sighing yet again. 'I'm not,' I protest. 'I was just going to clear my head.'
Alice looks at me and shrugs. 'Well, okay. But you can't run off. I'll see you decide it, and we will come after you.'
'I wouldn't doubt it for a minute.'
Alice smiles. 'Hold on.' She darts from the room, only to return several seconds later. She hands me a box, and then a sleek silver phone. 'Here. All our numbers are on it. It's fully charged - use it if you need us, okay?'
I place the box on the desk - still unable to think of it as mine - alongside the Mac. I smile at her. 'Thank you - I never did have one of these.'
Alice winks. 'I know.' She looks over her shoulder. 'Don't be too long, okay?' She waggles her fingers and exits the room.
I put the phone on the bed and turn to the wardrobe. Rummaging through, I choose a pair of distressed denim jeans and the jacket I'd worn here. I find a pair of hiking boots and carefully lace them up. Sliding the phone into my front pocket, I open the balcony door and jump over the ledge.
It's raining. Big surprise - you'd think with all the climate changes Forks would have had a weather update - but no. Strangely, it comforts me - a little familiarity in the craziness that surrounds me. I pull up my hood and begin to run.
I pay no attention to where I'm going, allowing my mind to wander.
Would it be a sensible idea to introduce myself to the Volturi? To make them aware of my presence? Or should I keep them ignorant, to remain off their radar? Perhaps they did not like the Cullen's way of life - perhaps they disliked the size of their coven. From what Carlisle told me, the Volturi are the largest coven of vampires in the world - and the Cullens, even as a family - are the second largest. They told me they had formed stronger bonds than that of the Volturi - are they aware of that? Do they approve?
