I drop to the forest floor and look at Will again.

Wow, he's like his father. A fresh round of pain hits me once more. I breathe, my hackles raised.

'Jeez. You stink.'

Will laughs. 'You don't smell too good yourself.'

I grin. 'So - you're Jacob's boy?'

'One of them.'

I feel a little pained to think of this. Jacob went on to have a family. Without me.

'Oh.' I cock my head. 'How many?'

'I have three brothers, and a twin sister. I'm the only one who's ever phased, though.' He clears his throat. 'Like, turned. Into a wolf.'

'Yeah, could you explain that for me? I mean, I've heard of werewolves, but it's the middle of the day. And you went from guy to wolf to guy again.'

Will laughs, sounding so much like Jacob I begin to grin back. My phone starts to buzz - I quickly reject the call, my interest centered on Jacob's son.

'I won't explain how it works, but basically, we're shape shifters. Not related to - um - Children of the Moon.'

Children of the Moon. Oh God, that guy in Romania - didn't he refer to himself as one of those? Before I hissed and ran away, as usual.

Anyway, Will.

He smiles at me. 'Quileutes have been able to do this for centuries - we protect our tribe from our enemies, the Cold Ones.'

I look at my body. 'That's us, right? The creepy blood drinkers?'

He smiles. 'Yes.'

I frown. 'But there's a house full of vamps right here in Forks!'

Will grins. 'Nearly two centuries ago, a descendant of mine made a treaty with them - if they stayed off our land and didn't hunt humans, we would leave them in peace.'

I nod. 'Okay. Following. Go on - how's Jacob related to this?'

'My father was in the last wolf pack - he was the last of them to die, which is why I am so young. The others... Their grandfathers were in the original packs. As my father never imprinted, he didn't begin aging until around thirty years ago. He had us late, and he died young.'

I frown. 'I'm sorry.' I say.

'What he would have given to see you again.'

I sigh. Jeez. My disappearance had caused quite a few heartbreaks, huh?

'What's imprinting?'

'Finding your soulmate.' Will says simply.

'Oh.'

'My father loved my mother, but he told me - he would never love anyone as much as he loved you. He knew it was selfish, and he loved my mother dearly - but never like he loved you.'

I feel my chest pains again. Oh God, this was messed up.

'Why did he leave me then, if he loved me?'

'He never left you!' Will said defiantly. 'That day you disappeared - my father told me he thought it was his fault. He blamed himself until the day he died. He was a new wolf - he knew if he lost control around you, he'd have killed you.' Will looks at me intensely. 'Wolves begin phasing using their anger - any strong emotion sends us over the edge, causing us to phase. My father knew, if something happened to you, he'd never forgive himself.' Will looks to the floor. 'He never did.'
