ready to leave his apartment, hinata sighed as he dug for his keys he's accidentally put into the wrong side of his bag when his phone began ringing and his muscular butt cheek vibrated slightly.
annoyed, he fished his phone out of the jeans pocket he's put it in before and almost let it slip out of his grip after the caller ID blinded him.
"fuck shit fuck no", he panted when his panic spiked and nervousness kicked in, making it harder for him to process the situation.
"tobio?", he subconsciously mumbled with a dragged tone escaping his mouth when his hands reached for the door knob of his front door. never once has he called kageyama by his given name. not even the first time they've met, not even when he'd wished to hold him close the last time they've played together.
the name sounded bitter yet incredibly smooth, giving him goosebumps just by the way it pushed past his plump lips this easily.
was there any reason to feel this close yet again distanced from the one he actually fell for?
kageyama's breath caught in his throat, loud enough to be acknowledged by hinata because of the mention of his given name. was it this unordinary for the both of them to communicate like close friends after all?
besides,, were they even close friends?
pushing aside the negative thoughts to prevent them from bringing him down, he stilled for a second. would kageyama hang up now? or even worse.. would he call hinata by his last name and ignore this moment all together?
surely the fuck not.
"hey shoyo", kageyama whispered, making hinata's heart bloom ever so slightly. his tone could light up the dark nights hinata told himself there's nothing between the both of them, it could burn the ginger's insides and lastly— it could make the latter fall four times over again.
the silence following his simple words was dragging out, sketching a little thin line between the both of them and brought down the meaningful emotion lingering upon the two.
"anything you wanna talk bout? haven't heard yo voice in a while, ya know", hinata slanged when he felt a rush of embarrassment flood his body. shook by the little conversation starter, kageyama stirred a little in the position he found himself in.
"nah, just wanted to hear your voice", he managed to form with much effort behind the simple words he's mouthed a few moments ago. it wasn't easy being honest when one's favorite person has caught you off guard, after all.
"that's cool", hinata sweated then fiddled with his sweater strap in process. "whatcha up to?", he continued the conversation as if they wouldn't have talked in a while.
"visiting the mall, wanna join me?", kageyama deadpanned, waiting for a response from the other end of the call.
"if ya don't mind", hinata laughed after he relaxed a little and let himself drown in the simplicity of their ever so slight interaction.
"i wouldn't have suggested taking you with me if i'd mind", the other end explained as if the polite manner of hinata wouldn't have been necessary in the first place.
"that's a way of being kind and less of a pick-me-bitch, dumbass"

(lowkey would've ended this chapter here but damn, it's been like two years since i last updated this book and i kinda want it to end somehow or another in the next chapter so here you go)
arriving at the mall, hinata looked around and spotted a dark haired, tall male with broad shoulders, a jawline that could carve out marble- he looked absolutely fine for somebody who's just ran three miles to meet the person he's spent most of his time with. striking up towards kageyama, hinata felt a rush of hesitation burst through him. sure, kageyama was a person he shouldn't be all too shy and polite to but the realization, that only the both of them met, was cursing through him faster than blood could flow through his raw veins.
