Everyone swarmed the newbie, reaching down, pulling at his clothes, brushing dirt off him. He looked as white as the clouds and stood there with an expression on his face. Confusion? The boy looked around at his surroundings, looked at the Gladers and his mouth twitched as if he wanted to say something.
His eyes met Delaney's. They both held each others gaze and Delaney grew uncomfortable under his searching eyes. Should she smile? Or, uh, wave? Or say "hi"?
In the end, embarassment got thr better of her and she looked away. She looked fown and noticed her hand still in Newt's. She smiled and leaned against him.
"Look at the Greenbean," Gally sniggered at the newbie. "Gonna break his shuck neck checkin' out the new digs." His remark earnt him a few giggles and he basked in the glory.
"Shut it, Gally," Delaney glared at him.
"No one asked for your opinion, Deli-meat," Gally glared back, stepping foward and towering over her.
Delaney stepped foward to meet his gaze, even though she felt like a measly beetle blade in comparison.
"No one asked for your's either, shank," her voice stayed a lot more even than she'd expected.
Newt stepped in. He ran his hands through his hair, a motion that he made much longer than necessary.
"Gally, you have to be more understanding of the Greenie," Newt said coolly. "You know you were klunking your pants when you got here."
"Cool it, lover boy," as Gally spoke, flecks of spit flew from his mouth and landed on unfortunate people and objects. Gally nodded towards their entwined hands. "What's this?" A sly smile twisted his features.
"It's nothing, shuck-face," Newt still wouldn't let go and stood firm in his place.
"Right."
Delaney focused back on the Greenie. He looked confused. If it was by where he was, or by their argument, she had absolutely no idea. Gally pushed Newt backwards with both hands and stormed off to sit down on a concrete block that had crumble from one of the buildings.
No one seemed to be saying anything, so Delaney decided to take over. She walked up to him, took his hand and shook it vigorously, smiling and ignoring the mildly annoyed Alby and bemused Gladers.
"Welcome to the Glade, Greenie," she let go. "This place is not as repugnant as it looks, I'm serious."
"What the hell does repugnant mean?" He raised his eyebrows, which framed his frightened eyes perfectly.
"It means bad. Sorry was that slightly intimidating?" The Greenie nodded. "Oh dear. Haha, sorry. I'm big on reading. It's one of the only great things that come up in that damned box. That and the dictionary-thesaurus. I'm sorry, I'm rambling."
She paused.
"What's your name? Do you remember your name?"
The newbie stood for a moment, thinking hard, it seemed.
"It's... Thomas."
"Cool. Mine's Delaney."
Thomas nodded and looked down. He kicked at the dust on the ground. Then his emotions collected on his face and melded into anger.
"Why am I here? Who sent me here? Who are you all? What are you doing? I don't know where I am and I want some answers!" The words poured out of his mouth, like water out of a jug.
Suddenly, an alien scream erupted and everyone's head snapped around to the direction of it. Delaney froze. She never should have left Ben alone. She swivelled back around to look at Thomas.
"Unfortunately, none of us are going to answer any of your questions right now. We have bigger problems." Delaney broke into a sprint, yelling at the other Mwd-jacks to get their butts moving and pulling Newt with her. Alby sprinted after them. "Stick with Chuck!" Delaney yelled over her shoulder at Thomas.
A chubby little kid stepped nervously out from the crowd and introduced himself as Chuck to Thomas. Delaney looked at the rest of the Gladers and checked it was all good outside before she stepped inside the Homestead and ran to the shrieking Ben.
