The alarm sounded. A newbie was coming and everyone was becoming curious. Delaney couldn't understand why. It was just a newbie. They should all be used to it by now. She was. Being in the maze for a year and a half did that to you.
Although, she pitied the Greenie. Coming up in the Box was a hellish experience. But she'd seen the show millions of times.
Delaney got up and left Ben's side. Alby would want her out there qnd so would Newt. She gave Ben one last look as she went out the door. How on earth could he have slept through the alarm? Especially in the terrible state he was in.
Being a Med-jack wasn't an especially hard job. Not many runners git stung really. And people in the other job bases rarely hurt themselves seriously. Slicers just needed stitches sometimes, Frypan needed help with burns sometimes, simple stuff like that.
Being the only girl in the Glade wasn't difficult either, just irritating. She got name-calling, play-fighting and, sorst of all, admirers. She shuddered at the amount of guys who'd asked her out, the amount of guys who wished they could ask her out.
Slowly she picked her way to the Box and gently pushed through to the front so she was standing next to Newt.
"Hey, shank," she smiled and elbowed him in the ribs.
"Ow! Del!" he scowled but then smiled back, his eyes creasing at the corners.
"Do you think it's almost there?" she asked, bored and her ears aching from the grinding sound.
"I don't know, to be honest," Newt bit at the corner of his thumb. It was a strange habit, but it made Delaney like him even more.
She plopped herself onto the floor and pulled Newt down next to her. She held his wrist for a minute, the Box was almost here. Newt let go, but carefully took her hand. They were both nervous. Having her best friend here with her made her feel safer. Newt didn't let go.
"Where's Alby?" Delaney shot a quick glance at Newt.
"Shuck knows. I bloody don't."
Delaney nodded and looked down at the box. A loud clank sounded and she searched for Alby, looking around the Glade. She spotted him and waved. He was jogging towards her and Newt.
"Greenie's almost here, ain't he?" Alby asked, towering over Delaney.
She craned her neck and nodded again.
"Yep. Bet the poor shank's klunked his shucking pants."
An orchestra of clanks and groans sounded and she knew the Box had stopped. She pulled Newt up with her and they stood, hand in hand, watching silently. The doors of the box opened with a long creaking sound.
Delaney stepped back a little. The boy looked scared to death. He was good-looking. He had short dark hair, eyes you could get lost in and so... innocent?
The Gladers errupted into a babble of judgemental remarks.
"Look at that shank."
"What's his name? Klunk-head?"
"Shut it, shuck-face."
"Bet he klunked his pants."
Delaney turned around and gave them all a warning look. She held it for a while and they eventually shut up.
"Back off, shanks."
Alby bent down and held out a hand to the Greenie. Here came what he said to all the newbies. Delaney rolled her eyes in anticipation.
"Nice to meet ya, shank," Alby repeated like a mindless robot. "Welcome to the Glade."
