I wasn't considered a pretty person for a long time. I was overweight most of my life with overgrown hair and a consistent case of head lice that seemingly never went away no matter how hard I tried. I swear my tangly hair was like their dream mansion or something.
I have a mom but no dad. Never knew him. I also have three siblings and four pets so we never really had a lot of money, especially considering my mom never went to university and dropped out of high school.
I'd spent most of my time in the lower class of society, helping take care of my family and watching British romantic comedies to get through the day. Since we never had cable, we only had a few movies and cartoons we could watch so I was stuck watching the same show on repeat. Every. Single. Day.
My life changed three years ago though. Our grandparents died and my mom got everything since she's the only family they really had. My grandparents had been pretty wealthy so we got the house, the money, everything.
I had my own room now and my mom finally had the money to pay for nursing school. Which she was working her ass off in to provide for us better than she already was.
Through those three years, I lost the weight and entered late teenage years. Gained about an extra ten inches of height, chopped my hair and spent my time working out at the gym rather than sitting and binging my brains out on three week old marshmallows.
I dropped out of school the year my grandparents died due to bullying and worked online, trying my hardest to get a proper education. But now that my mom was working so hard in university, she wanted me to do the same thing.
"You finally did it!" She smiled toward me once I told her I'd finished my high school education. It wasn't hard, but it wasn't exactly the most fun either so it took a while to finally make it through. "Look at us, educated and finally moving on up! I'm so proud of us."
"I'm more proud of you than anything, Mom."
"Speaking of!" She says down on my bed and grabbed my hands. "I passed the final exam...I'm a nurse!"
"Oh my god- I-...that's amazing!" I was overjoyed to hear it. I'd watched her cry trying to study through the noise of my siblings arguing. She barely slept to pass this exam and she'd finally done it.
"I know! I'm celebrating!"
"That's what the wine's for?" I laughed a bit, gesturing to the red wine in her hand.
"Yes! Want some?"
"No thanks. I've gotta put the kids to bed and make sure they stay there."
"You should look at the universities here. They've got some really nice ones."
"You want me to go to university?"
"Of course I do! Don't you?"
"Um..." I thought back to the reason I left school in the first place. "I don't know yet."
"We'll give it some thought, I'm gonna do some job searching and make sure my hands still look good in rubber gloves!" She left me alone and gently closed my bedroom door. I set my laptop aside and took a deep breath.
University huh?
