The week went by in a blur of study material and loud music. When I went home on Friday, the first to greet me were our two dogs. They both ran up to me with wagging tails, nearly making me fall when they jumped up to lick my hands.
"You're home! How was the first week?" My mom jogged over and hugged me tightly.
"It was okay. I'm going out tomorrow night."
"Oh, what for?" She pulled back and cocked her head.
"I've got a date."
"With who?"
"A guy a met at the gym who also happens to be my roommate. He's kind of a loser but I guess he's okay."
"Well tell me about him! What's he look like?"
"A train wreck. He pierced his own face and works at a coffee shop. He's got bright green hair."
"Sounds like a real winner." My twin jogged downstairs. "And you're late, I told you I wanted you to meet my boyfriend."
"No thanks. I got caught up with laundry so I could purposefully miss him."
"Oh great." She rolled her eyes and turned to the side. "How do I look?"
She wore three inch black heels and a rather fancy dress that was too short for my liking. Her hair was down and straightened, a diamond choker around her neck that matched her earrings.
"Like you have a lot of money."
"Awesome! I'm going out with my friends so I want to look like I'm better than them."
"You've succeeded."
"Want to come with?"
"No."
"Oh come on, it's a party. You'll have fun. Plus you can spy on me and make sure nobody takes me home."
"...I'll go get dressed."
I wasn't in the mood to go to any party but I wanted to at least get my sister home safe. I just stood in the corner with a drink in my hand, a bunch of drunk teenagers dancing around me.
I'll admit though, my sister was the most beautiful girl there. And that sure made me happy.
"Shuji!" She stepped over to me and grabbed my arm. "Come dance with me!"
"No."
"Come on, you look like a gay party pooper just standing here."
"Exactly my goal."
"I just need to get you tipsy enough to be fun." She unscrewed the lid of a small alcohol container and poured it into my cup. "Remember when you used to be fun? We'd dig for bugs in the backyard and steal mom's weed."
"I'm still fun."
"Prove it."
I glared at her and downed my cup within a couple seconds, dragging her over to the kitchen and filling it halfway with vodka. I downed that too, hating the way it tasted on the way down. "Come on, let's dance then."
"There's my bro." She grabbed my hand and pulled me back to the living room. I lost clear vision halfway through the third song, my eyes seeing double and my movements a bit sluggish.
I'm not the best dancer but when it's with Yuki, I sort of forget everyone else is there. We were nothing alike but she's still my twin and I love to be around her.
"You good?" She laughed, placing a hand on my chest when I stumbled.
"I'm great. You're just a little blurry."
"Yeah? Can you walk straight? Pass a test from a cop?"
"Oh hell yeah." I replied confidently, even if my words were slurred. "In fact, I think I should get another drink."
"Yeah? Wanna go smoke in the upstairs bathroom?"
"Oh fuck yes." I grabbed the bottle of vodka from the kitchen and followed her up to the bathroom, finding a couple people sitting in the bathroom on the edge of the tub. They were already smoking and I recognized one of them. "Whatever happened to not smoking, Adam?"
"It was offered." He smiled back at me. "This is my friend Hirochi."
"This is my twin sister, Yuki. Yuki this is Adam. I'm Shuji by the way." I nodded to the other girl, who looked similar to Adam but with blue hair and an eyebrow piercing.
"This is the guy I was telling you about." Adam spoke to the quieter girl, who was mostly just paying attention to my sister, as she rolling a joint on the counter.
"Good to know. He's cute."
Adam stood up and pulled me down to sit on the ground with him. I nearly fell but he helped me. "Wow, you drunk already?"
"Little bit."
"Never thought I'd see you at a party. Doesn't seem like your thing."
"I came to watch Yuki. She tends to get into trouble."
"From the looks of it, so do you. Your shirt's unbuttoned."
"Yeah it got really hot out there." I sighed and drank straight from the glass bottle in my hand. "And in here too, Geez." I pulled my shirt off and set it in his lap, leaning my bare back against the wall. "Why do you smell like candy?"
"Would've thought I smelled like weed. I've been eating lollipops all night."
"Do you taste like them?"
His face flushed red. "I'm just gonna take this away..." he pulled the bottle from me and set it down on the far side of him. "And uh...I don't know. Probably."
"Yeah?" I leaned close to his face, placing a hand on his jawline and trailing my fingers down the side of his neck. "Mind if I confirm that for you?"
"I- uh- Yuki?"
My sister turner around, choking back a laugh when she saw me. "Sorry about him." She crouched down and pulled my hand off of him, placing the lit joint between my fingers. "I'll take him home soon before he starts puking."
I took a hit and leaned back to him, grabbing his chin and blowing the smoke into his mouth. "I don't feel sick at all."
"Yeah not yet." She sighed. "It'll hit you in a few minutes. Do not throw yourself at him."
"Why not? He's so hot." I rubbed my thumb against his jawline, watching his face grow redder by the second.
I can barely see his face but I still think so. There's a lump in my throat that the smoke won't push away and I'm starting to feel sick.
"Haha..." he laughed nervously. "Thank you."
I kept drinking, losing track of time up until the moment I held my sisters hair back while she threw up in the toilet. She was nearly as drunk as me, equally as stoned.
"Here, I'll drive you two home and grab a bowl so she won't puke in your car." Adam took my keys and smiled. "Hirochi, follow us in your car so you can take me home afterwards."
"Sure."
