“We’re closing up soon.”
I took another shot. The liquid streaming down my throat like fire.
“What time is it?”
I rubbed the sleep from my eyes and reached for my cell phone. Dead.
“It’s almost three o’ clock in the morning.”
“Time goes by when you’re having fun!”
I held up my empty shot glass as if to take a toast, receiving nothing but the shimmer of the glass under the dim bar lights.
“Here. Take this last one on the house.”
The bartender poured the last of the scotch bottle into my glass.
“To all the bitches he’s been screwing behind my back!” Laughing to myself I took the last one fast. Letting the burning sensation seep it’s way through my chest.
“Do you need a ride home?”
“Excuse me?” I turned to face the boy looking back at me with a smug grin on his face. That bastard.
“I think you might’ve had a little too much to drink.” He scooted to the barstool next to me.
“I have not had too much to drink.” The words slurred in my mouth. I could taste the bitter on my tongue.
The bartender placed the empty scotch bottle in front of me.
“I’d beg to differ.”
“Fine. Maybe I’m a bit drunk, but I’m more than capable of getting home on my own.”
“What’s your name?” He leaned on his hand, and eyed me like a tiger.
“What’s yours?”
“I asked you first.”
“We could say it at the same time.”
“We could.”
“On the count of three. One…two…three.”
There was a moment of silence. Neither of us spoke.
“You didn’t say your name.” He seemed shocked, like he actually expected me to answer.
“Well, neither did you.”
“Well why didn’t you?”
“If we would’ve said it at the same time, we couldn’t have heard the other speak, and therefor this was all just a pointless stunt.”
His voice was low and husky. “My name is Evan.”
“My name is Rosemary.”
“You’re very beautiful Rosemary.”
“And you’re very cheesy Evan, but you have a cute face, so I guess that makes up for things.”
He smiled at me, showing off his pearly white teeth.
“Let me take you home.”
“How do I know you won’t just take me to an alley, rape me, and leave me there to die?”
“You don’t know. You just have to trust that I won’t.”
“Ok. Let’s go then.”
