It had felt like years had gone past since Sarah left to go scavenge supplies. I glanced out the window of the bedroom, watching the sunset starting to appear. I began to grow anxious as I found myself starting to bite my nails. Where the hell is Sarah? Maybe she got lost. Should I go out and look for her? No, I should listen to what she said and stay in the house. But what if she needs my help?
After a few moments of continuous thoughts and scenarios racing through my head... I decided to go out and look for her. I stood up, almost falling over right away, my legs starting to go out. No. I need to be strong. I need to be strong for Sarah.
I shook my arms around a took a deep breath before heading towards the bedroom door. I was exhausted, but I need to fight my way through this.
"Come on, y/n. You've always been strong. You can't give up now."
After making my way down the stairs, I barely made it, gasping for air as I had been out of breath. I soon arrived in the kitchen and quickly scrambled through the drawers before finding a large kitchen knife. I eyed it down, before slipping it behind me, tucking it into the belt of my pants.
I soon made it to the front door, hesitating to whether or not go through with my plan. Yes there are many cons to this idea, but I need Sarah. I shut my eyes tightly and opened the front door quickly. My heart began to pound inside of my chest again. I opened my eyes slowly and ventured off into the woods, into the unknown. I followed the direction in which Sarah had taken earlier, hoping and praying I would not get lost or run into anything bad.
I stumbled through the woods a bit, reconsidering my decision I had just made. My mind was racing. My mind always raced. It was the constant anxiety and fear I could never seem to get over, even prior to the apocalypse.
I was suddenly jolted to the ground by a large object. I screamed out, being startled and terrified. I found myself laying flat on the wooded terrain with a death like creature appearing over me. Tears began to fill my eyes as the feeling of shock overwhelmed my body. So this is a zombie... Is this where I die?
The creature fell on top of me as it groaned out. I yelled again and used the upmost strength I had left to push it away and avoid it from trying to eat me alive. The bloody and grimy teeth was getting closer and closer to my face, my body being filled to the max with fear.
A loud slicing sound appeared out of no where as I closed my eyes tightly. The weightless zombie soon falling to the side of me. I was petrified, not allowing myself to open my eyes that were glued shut.
"y/n?!" A familiar voice whispered out with a slight panicked tone. My eyes unsealed themselves, almost like it was instinctive to that voice. "S-Sarah?" I cried out before watching Sarah holster her knife. Sarah aided me to stand up as she put her hands under my arm pits, lifting me up. I could barely stand as I grabbed on to Sarah for balance.
"It's okay... It's okay... Let's get back home." She said softly before picking me up gently with a tight grasp. I buried my face into the crook of her neck, not being able to do anything but quietly sob. She had carried me into the house and locked the front door behind her before carrying me back up the stairs and carefully laying me back in bed.
She had turned on a lantern that burned before pulling a chair over to the side of the bed. "Are you hurt?" She frantically began to lift up my shirt to see if anything was bleeding or even bruised. She had sighed with relief. "You're lucky you didn't get bit or scratched by that thing." Sarah said softly.
"I'm sorry... I really am." I said, regretful of my actions. "I just- I didn't know if you were okay. You were gone for forever. I was just worried..."
"I know... and I'm sorry about that. I ran into trouble but it's okay now. You have nothing to worry about." Sarah replied.
Sarah soon pulled me into her embrace. I guess she had noticed how fast I had been breathing and how upset I had been. I hugged her back as tight as I could with whatever strength I had left. I never wanted to leave her sweet and warm embrace. She made me feel at home. I had never felt this way before.
Sudden pain came from my arm as I tightened up a bit and let go of Sarah's embrace. Sarah pulled away quickly and looked at me "What's wrong, y/n? Are you okay? Did I hurt you?"
I shook my head and rolled up my arm sleeve just a bit to see where the pain was coming from. Before fully revealing my injury, Sarah had gently grabbed my shirt sleeve and rolled it up for me, almost in a rush to see what had happened to me. She sighed again with relief, seeing just a small scrape to my elbow. "I'll patch you up, it's okay. Nothing to be worried about." Sarah said soothingly.
I nodded and held up my shirt sleeve before watching Sarah leave the room quickly. I looked down at the scrape on my elbow and shook my head
God, y/n you have to be smarter next time. You're a complete idiot!
Sarah soon reappeared holding a white bottle and bandages.
"Here, hold your sleeve up. I need to clean it so it doesn't get infected." Sarah stated, being demanding but in a nice way.
I nodded and followed her orders as I held up my sleeve and watched her. She dampened a piece of gauze with the liquid from the white bottle and dabbed it on the scrape. I winced in pain and pulled my arm away from Sarah. "I know it hurts, y/n. I'm sorry." Sarah gently grabbed my arm and inched closer to me before continuing to clean the wound. I couldn't help but just watch her. She was so kind.
"Why do you care about me so much, Sarah?" I asked, needing the answer that I had been dying to know.
"Well, y/n... I care about you so much because in this world, each other is all that we got. We survive by sticking together." Sarah's lips curved upward as her eyes interlocked with mine. I couldn't help but smile back. I was so glad that someone actually cared for me.
Sarah began to bandage my wound, being cautious not to put me in too much pain, which I appreciated. She was careful and understood.
She then stood up again and walked over to the wardrobe, picking out an oversized t-shirt and sweatpants before setting them softly on the bed next to me. "Here, get dressed into some clean clothes. I'm going to get your medicine ready." She said before leaving a gentle kiss upon my forehead and walking out of the room.
I picked up the clothes as my hands shook a little. I'm so damn weak. I pulled the clothes up to my face and took a deep breath in through my nose. Of course the clothes smell good. Everything is perfect around here. I soon got dressed into the nice clothes that Sarah had left for me and I laid back in the bed, being very comfortable.
Sarah soon reappeared in the room holding a cup filled with pills in one hand and a glass of water in the other. She carefully handed the cup filled with pills as I put them all in my mouth before taking a sip of water to wash them down.
I laid down in the bed as Sarah tucked me in, making sure I was comfortable and okay. Just her presence made me feel warm inside.
"Sleep tight, sweet girl." Her voice soothed, her eyes crinkling at the corners as she caressed my cheek again with her soft hand.
"Goodnight, Sarah." I replied before quickly dozing off to sleep.
