"F-frick!" I have to catch my tongue once again, to stop myself from cursing. This should be a very simple spell. A nice little taster of what's to come. After revising for months on end at home, I know every detail of this charm, inside and out. But alas, you wouldn't be able to tell from the way this lesson is panning out. I stand across from the mechanical figure, and frustratedly watch it whirr back to default position once again. That was the 17th fail; a running tally that my oh-so considerate friends decided to keep track of.
"Yo, Ash, I don't think the entire head of the mannequin is supposed to turn blue from casting Expelliarmus." Hoseok snickers, taking enormous joy from this entire situation. Sure enough, the once dark-wooded Death-Eater head is a bright shade of teal. I look it in the eyes, and even the inanimate figure seems to look confused at it's current state. Jungkook, from the left of me, simply stares blankly at my mannequin, completely and utterly disorientated as to how this came to be. That's right. I'm so bad at this that the only thing I've successfully delivered, is an existential crisis to Jungkook.
Cling, ping ping, yet another wand drops to the floor, joining the chorus of successful spells I've heard this afternoon, and surprise, surprise, the man to my right, Taehyung, proves to be the caster of the spell. See, the majority people in the room have had a mostly victorious record, with disarming our mechanical opponents being met frequently. But oh no, that wasn't good enough. Every single damn time that he casts the spell, it works with perfection.
"Jeez, Taehyung's at it again! Looks like that new duel club is really paying off for our guy," Hoseok comments to me, to which I give a small nod to. To begin with I was fully supportive, clapping with encouragement as he landed each good hit, but slowly I began to feel a silent jealousy for the high-achiever, especially considering my.... er.... minimal wins.
I can feel an undeniable pout surface on my lips, so I scratch the side of my wand to try to release some of my surfacing tension. I pick at the skull-ended side, and my mind blanks a little. I wonder why this particular design was picked for me, considering the enormous amount of bad luck this particular wand is bringing me in class. With a short sigh, I raise it once again, assuming the casual stance described my revision book, and with slight force, just as described, flick up my wand to the right. Maybe this time.. "Expelliarmus!"
The figure flails slightly, but not before returning to its en guard position. Wand still in hand. Still armed. I let out a deep huff, and glare at the dumb, blue expression that has been in front of me for the best part of an hour. "Can I help you with that?" A voice inquires politely from next to me. A head tilts in my periferal. I know instantly that Mr. Role Model is the one offering me a hand. I have declined several times already, out of pure self-righteousness, but how can I refuse again when this is getting me nowhere? "Yeah, maybe that would be for the best," I finally let out. After all the nice things he's done for me, to get stubborn for his successes will only makes me a bad friend. "So, where can I improve first?"

Flopping down in one of the many pretty wooden chairs scattered around the edge of the Defence Against The Dark Arts room, I wipe my forehead. I think I can leave satisfied and much less frustrated, but my god did it take some effort to get to that point. Taehyung, Hoseok, Namjoon and I decided to wrap up things a couple of minutes ago, and sit by the closest high arched stone window, which emits a nice draught from an opened panel, diluting the heat a little. Our teacher, Professor Lupin, insisted on keeping most windows shut, but even he eventually admitted the need of some fresh air.
Strolling to the slightly raised stage at the front of the room, Lupin begins to swiftly pack away his things, while announcing the official end of practice. This stirrs Yoongi, Jimin and Jungkook to call it quits with the mannequins. Instead of coming over to us, however, Yoongi and Jungkook follow Lupin, as he ascends the stairs into his main office, before closing the door behind him quickly. I stare at the door with curiosity. I hope they aren't in trouble, somehow. My attention is diverted as Jimin crosses my vision, and sits in the chair next to me. Not even the subtlest sweat can be seen tracing his features despite the weather turn, and as he leans back next to me, I contemplate how it must feel to always look so good. Ashlyn, get a grip. We get it, they're all attractive as hell. "So, how did things go for you?" I begin the conversation.
"Well, I'd say productive? Though, it's slightly hard to judge when Taehyung likes to throw me off my rhythm via bad jokes, and showing off." The constant competitive spirit between the two is always amusing. Taehyung with a natural warm energy, Jimin with a cool one. Taehyung's down to earth, yet polite, way of being, versus Jimin's regal, yet respective, mannerisms. The Slytherin, the Hufflepuff. Both mature, but comfortable enough to know when to act in mischief. Though, not entirely sure if he was totally joking this time around, I decide not to laugh just in case. Jimin clears his throat, and continues.
"Speaking of Taehyung, I saw him offering you some assistance, hopefully it helped?" I hum in response. "It certainly did. It's not quite to the level of you lot yet, but in the last 2 minutes I hit.. maybe 9?" Jimin raises his eyebrows and fully turns his head my way, and gives me a quick celebratory clap, making me cover my face in bashfulness. He lightly smiles at my actions.
"Don't hide! That's worth applauding. I'm glad you found the technique; there's always bound to be a separation between what you read, and what you actually do."
"That's what Taehyung said. He suggested a tutoring session for me each week, so that I can build what I've missed, which I'd be dumb to decline," I give a smile to Taehyung behind me, whom breaks conversation with Namjoon to return one. On the subject of Namjoon, as I glance his way, his face shows a serious expression of contemplation. I decide I'll ask him about that later. Before I can think about it for too long, Jimin speaks up again.
"I.. I think that was a nice idea. Very thoughtful of him, actually." His eyes sharply look away from me, and gaze towards a far window. I continue conversation, while tapping my chair, failing to acknowledge a growing tension.
"Honestly! I insisted he didn't have to, but of course, he still was still resolute about it. His kindness doesn't cease to amaze me sometimes, you know?" I look to Jimin for an answer. His neck tenses a little, not before quickly releasing though. "..yeah. I do know." A hand quickly sweeps through his platinum blonde locks, and as it falls, I notice his posture looks much more closed off, more faced away. Maybe something separate is playing on his mind? I cant see how I said anything wrong. I huff a little, and cross my legs.
"Excuse me Ash?" Namjoon calls to me, a taut hint to his voice. I look over, to signify that I'm listening. "Could borrow you for a few minutes before lunch? I might need your help while I try to find something in the library." I smile, and nod. "Sure thing! Do you want to head there now?" I ask, thinking a change of scenery might be nice; it's been an eventful hour. He nods, and stands with a smile. I don't say goodbye to either Taehyung or Jimin, as I'm too busy thinking about what Namjoon might need my, of all people's, assistance for.

We walk along the exterior route of the building, shadows flit rapidly past my eyes, due to the decorative pillars' stance against the position of the sun. It's very pretty. Unlike mine, Namjoon's eyes dont blink or flicker due to the sudden changes, showing me once again just how used to the ways of the school my friends really are. But there is definitely something on his mind; I can sense it, just like I could with Jimin. He takes a breath, and slows his waling a little. "Listen, Ashlyn. There is a chance that my suspicion is wrong, but if we do find out something key," He pauses to look me in the eye, with a very warm gaze,
"Just know we won't think any less of you."
A/N: Hello! I know, I know, it's been a little while since I updated, but I hope the payoff was worth the wait! I have a couple small things to say. Firstly, thank you for 1K! For a small account, a thousand reads honestly feels wild, and I'm honestly just happy that you are all enjoying this story just as much as I enjoy exploring it :))
Secondly, you may be a little confused as to when this takes place, due to characters like Dumbledore and Lupin being included, despite this being set after the events of Harry Potter. I wanted the story to take place in modern time, but equally, there are some characters far too important for future plot to miss out on including. And as such, unless I have specifically said they are not, all characters will be alive except for Voldemort (for obvious reasons.) That means death eaters, teachers, past classmates are canonically alive, unless stated so in the book :)
Happy reading, and thank you all for actively commenting and voting!
P.S, I haven't fully proof read this chapter yet, so if you see me updating it, don't worry, you want miss anything, I'm just a bit of a perfectionist xx
