Champagne For My Real Friends

We all got very, very drunk to celebrate. I don't know how many times I heard "you two are definitely going to get married", and I played along while they planned our ridiculously extravagant Vegas wedding.
I had to remind them every two minutes that I wasn't going over to move in with the guy, just to hang out and get to know each other, and that I'd probably end up flying back across the country to my parents within a couple of weeks. They didn't even seem to hear me.

They invited themselves to stay but I didn't mind, it made sense to spend as much time as possible together anyway. At some unearthly hour we'd all had our fill of terrible horror movies and junk food, and Cat and I were the only ones still awake.
Her head was in my lap like a real kitten, craving physical contact.
"Cara?"
"Mhm?"
She sat up and looked me straight in the face.
"I'm really going to miss you."
Tears pooled in her green-brown eyes.
"Cat-" I cupped her face, "you're not crying? Why are you crying?"
It wasn't like her. Cat was always collected, even after a few glasses of wine.
She leaned forward until I could feel her warm breath on my face, and kissed me.
That wasn't the first time, either. Cat and I knew each other in my pre-America life. We went to school together until I was eight. Her parents came over on holiday and stayed with mine not long after we moved back to Florida, but distance and a lack of money got in the way and we didn't see each other again for almost ten years- until I showed up on her doorstep on the first day of what was meant to be my one week stint in Dublin.
There was an attraction there. She grew up beautiful, and I knew she felt it too,
but we were too similar to long lost sisters. Nothing ever came of it and we quickly forgot. At least, I forgot.

"Just be careful while you're gone, okay? I love you."
One tear slid down her face as she spoke.
"I will, Kitkat. I love you too."

She smiled through the obvious pain she was feeling. It scared me.

"Come on, it's late. I'm jealous of those two." I gestured to Selena and Beth passed out on the floor.
Cat nodded back at me in agreement and curled up on the couch, pulling a blanket around herself.
I switched off the lamp and TV, and settled down beside her in the dark. My phone buzzed with a text from Vic.

/today has been so crazy. i can't wait to see you so i can finally relax./

It made me smile, but I fell asleep before I could text back.
