Kagami sighed as she looked at the invite on her phone. Her mother's words replayed in her head.
I will request for Adrien to go with you to the event.
Kagami didn't want to go with Adrien Agreste. That was the last thing she wante d to do. He had moved on to someone else from their breakup. Kagami, on the other hand, hadn't. Regardless of how many times she tried to convince herself, she just couldn't tell herself to forget him. Kagami was heartbroken, but it wasn't because of Adrien. It was his new girlfriend. Her best friend.
"Tatsu," Kagami said, "take me home."
The moment Kagami was in her plain, black and white room, she shut the door and locked it. She sat down on the ground, besides her bed. Using her hands, she pushed up her mattress. Underneath was one of the Dupain-Cheng bakery's boxes. She opened the box and looked at the items inside. A badge and a receipt. It wasn't much on the outside, but they meant a lot to Kagami on the inside. These items represented the first day they had met. The day Kagami found her first friend. Kagami opened her contacts and found who she wanted to talk to. She dialed the contact and put the phone to her ear. Almost immediately, the call was picked up.
"Hey, Kagami! I was just going to call you, do you think your mom would let you come over? I know it's last minute, but Adrien asked me to go to Audrey's party with him and the girls are helping me decide on what to wear. Also, will you be coming to the event too? Adrien told me you might be there."
Kagami's words hitched in her throat. Swallowing her despair, she opened her mouth, "I—I don't think I'll be allowed to go to your house, Marinette. And it's great that Adrien asked you. I look forward to seeing you both at the party."
"That's too bad, but I can't wait to see you! Bye, Kagami!"
Kagami ended the call and closed her box and hid it under her mattress. She got up off the floor and walked out of her room and down the stairs to the living room.
"Come, Kagami." She heard her mother call for her from their gigantic front doors. Kagami rushed towards the doors and opened them for her mother. They both got into Tatsu and Ms. Tsurugi told the car to go to the city hall.
"I trust Adrien is going with you, Kagami?"
Kagami looked down at her hands that were rested on her lap, "yes, Mother, he's going with me to the party."
"Good," her mother replied. The rest of the trip was silent, like it always was.
When they approached the city hall, Kagami saw Marinette and Adrien holding hands at the front while Mr. Agreste talked to Audrey through the tablet Nathalie was holding.
"I'm going to go to Adrien," Kagami quickly said before getting out of the car, hoping to get away from her mother as soon as she could. The moment Kagami stepped out of her car, Marinette waved to her excitedly while Adrien waved to her hesitantly. Kagami couldn't hold back her giggle seeing Marinette in the clothes she always wore. Her indecisiveness was strangely adorable.
"Kagami!" Marinette said as Kagami got closer, "you look beautiful. Not that you don't always look beautiful. Because you do."
Kagami laughed, "Marinette, I'm wearing the same thing I always do."
Marinette winked, "you still look stunning."
When they made their way into the city hall, slow dance music played through the speakers. Chloé came out of what felt like nowhere and grabbed onto Adrien.
"You're dancing with me, Adrikins, it's my mother's birthday after all."
Adrien smiled apologetically at Marinette, "I'll be back in a bit," he said before he was whisked away.
"Marinette, would you like to dance with me?" Kagami blurted out, without overthinking anything.
Marinette's face turned pink, "y—yeah, of course."
With Marinette's arms around Kagami and Kagami's arms around Marinette, Kagami felt genuinely happy for the first time since André and Audrey's 20th wedding anniversary.
