Alya sat on Marinette's bed as she waited for her to finish dressing up. Alya was dressed in a bulky costume. She was wearing a huge cookie costume. There were four holes for her arms, head, and legs. The cookie had brown spots that represented chocolate chips. She and Nino had decided to go for a couples costume. Nino was supposed to be dressed as a glass of milk. Alya looked up as Marinette walked out from her dressing area in her costume.

Marinette had always prided herself in making her own Halloween costume. This time was no different. She was suited in a black mermaid dress. The dress shimmered at the bottom as it flared out, slightly revealing Marinette's black, heeled boots. The top of her dress was slightly purple. The dress was an off-shouldered dress with her sleeves running down her arms and flaring at the bottom. Of course, Marinette had made sure to put pockets on the dress. She wore a black necklace with dark purple gems lining the edges. Her hair was tucked into a sort of wig cap. The black cap had two dark purple horns. She had two feathered, cardboard wings attached to her back. They had already done her makeup beforehand. Marinette eyelids were tainted purple with shimmery black at the ends. She had purple lipstick with black in the middle. Overall, she looked stunning. Marinette stretched out her hands and slowly spun around, showing Alya the dress.

"Well?" Marinette asked, after doing her spin, "Do I look like Maleficent?"

Alya's hand was at her mouth, shellshocked at how accurate and amazing Marinette's costume was.

"Girl, you could be Maleficent. You are definitely winning the homemade costume contest."

Marinette cackled jokingly, tucking her phone in her pocket alongside Tikki. Marinette had also made a costume for Tikki. Tikki was suited in a little dragon onesie with purple wings. Alya raised down to the bakery and was shortly followed by Marinette. This year, Alya had managed to convince her older sister, Nora, to take her little sisters trick or treating. This way, she could attend Chloé's party along with Marinette. Usually, Marinette would have skipped, but due to Alya's convincing (and Adrien being there), Marinette had decided to go. As the party was being held at the Mayor's hotel, Adrien's bodyguard was picking them up.

Alya and Marinette walked out of the bakery and stood in front of it, waiting for their ride. The sky was cloudy and dark. The air was chilly, perfect for that night. Especially for the people with heavy costumes.

A few minutes later, Adrien's car pulled up and the pair got into it.  Nino, in his white milk outfit, waved at them from the back seat. Adrien looked back from the passenger seat and waved at them. He was dressed in a knight's outfit. He had on a red cape, designed by Marinette. His armor was silver with a slight tinge of black. With assistance from Marinette, Adrien was able to function properly and comfortably. Otherwise, he would have been clanking uncomfortably across halls.

After a ride with Alya talking about her latest encounter with Ladybug, the car stopped in front of the Bourgeois Hotel. The group got out of the car, said bye to the bodyguard, and then walked through the front doors. Chloé, Sabrina, and the Mayor himself greeted them. Chloé was in her Ladybug costume with Sabrina as Cat Noir by her side. The mayor was next to them, holding a huge glass bowl of candy. The Mayor also had on a dress. To be specific, the dress was pink, glittery, and fluttery. It flowed down to his feet, slightly touching the ground. The top of the dress was sleeveless and had a heart-shaped bodice. His face was covered in pink makeup and long, black eyelashes covered in black mascara.

Chloé hugged Adrien and kissed both of his cheeks in greeting. She reluctantly did the same with Alya, Nino, and Marinette.

"Welcome to my party," Chloé said, in a monotone voice, "you can check out the haunted house or whatever. Make sure to enter your homemade costumes to the contest. If not that's fine too because I should win anyways."

Alya snickered, "You're entering? We all know you can't make anything to save your life."

Chloé scrunched her eyebrows, "People can learn, Césaire. Your stupid brain wouldn't know."

Alya's face switched into an angered expression. Before the girls had a cat fight, Nino ushered Alya away. Adrien and Marinette followed them.

"Ugh, I hate that girl!" Alya raged, taking deep breathes to calm herself, "Marinette, you should submit your costume. Everyone knows you're going to win. Me and Nino will go to the haunted house."

Marinette grinned, extremely proud of her work, "Will you be okay, though."

Alya nodded her head, "I'll be fine."

"I'll go with you Marinette," Adrien volunteered.

Marinette and Adrien walked to the costume booth where Vincent took photos of Marinette's costume.

"The results will be announced in 5 minutes. You are lucky, you got here just in time."

"You're costume really is gorgeous, Marinette." Adrien said as they walked away.

"Thank you, Adrien. Your costume is nice too." Marinette said, slightly blushing.

Adrien laughed, "Thanks to you."

Marinette laughed along with him, "It really was nothing."

Their laughter was interrupted by Chloé storming over.

"Dupain-Cheng, I need to talk to you. Alone."

Giving a shrug to Adrien, Marinette walked off with Chloé.

"What do you want, Chloé?" Marinette sighed, after they had gotten out of hearing-range from everyone around them.

Chloé stuck a finger in Marinette's face, "Pull out of the contest."

Marinette's face remained expressionless, "No."

"Listen here, Dupain-Cheng," Chloé was whisper shouting now, "if you do not pull out, I will tell Adrien everything."

Although those words frightened Marinette, she didn't show it.

"And?"

"Adrien will be disgusted by how long you kept your feelings for him."

This time, the fear took over, "Fine, Chloé. I'll withdraw."

"Good—"

"Hello, everyone!" Vincent's voice came through the speakers, "We have decided the costume winners! Can the contestants come up to the front?"

Marinette's face paled. It was too late. If she won, Chloé would tell everyone. More specifically, she would tell Adrien. With numb legs, she and Chloé made their way to the front, alongside a bunch of other people in costumes. Marinette saw a ghost, a pumpkin-head, a Majestia, a Cat Noir, a Queen Bee, and a Clara Nightingale. All of their costumes looked amazing. Marinette crossed her fingers, hoping she didn't win and have to face Chloé's wrath.

"First," Vincent said, "I would like to disqualify someone."

The crowd gasped simultaneously.

"As most of you know, this contest was for homemade entries. As the judges were examining each of the photos, they noticed something very off about one of the contestant's costume. It had a tag sticking out from the back. Now, why would a costume that is homemade have a tag? For these reasons, I would like to disqualify Chloé Bourgeois from the competition."

Over all the commotion in the crowd, everyone could hear Chloé's screeches as she stormed off. Marinette hoped Chloé wouldn't blurt her secret. Technically, Marinette hadn't beaten her at anything.

Vincent's voice interrupted her thoughts, "Finally, the moment we've all been waiting for, the winner of the contest is..."

All the contestants held their breaths. Marinette made eye contact with Alya and Nino before making eye contact with Adrien. They all gave her a thumbs up as encouragement.

"The winner is Marinette Dupain-Cheng for her splendid Maleficent costume. Give her a round of applause for winning a gift card to her own parents' bakery!"

Everyone cheered and laughed at the irony. Marinette chuckled with them. She had had no idea that was the prize. Otherwise, she doubted she, or Chloé, would have entered.

Happy Halloween!
