the undying stress of the lunar cycle

Late March of 1975

Remus Lupin had grown increasingly irritable since school had started again, and his friends had become more interested in their own lives. He was sinking into his own misery, and the full moon was a whip keeping him in form. He held on to the hope his friends around him could give; yet they did not know his true secret and therefore, could not help. It was an unrelenting cycle-

"What are you writing then Rem?" A blonde head said, overhead.

"Ah Nat, it's nothing really. Just some notes from last lesson." He smiled up at them, slightly grateful that had been interrupted.

"You seemed so deep in thought, I didn't want to distract you." Natasha said, "I was gonna ask about your upcoming illness."

"How long were you standing there?"

"Oh, it could have possibly been minutes. Hours even. Or months. But-"

"Hang on. What do you mean my upcoming illness?"

"Well Mr. Moon, it's approaching the time of the month. Not mine by the way." She added, when he opened his mouth. "I have noticed a pattern in your illnesses. You always tend to disappear on the full moon, and what tends to be linked to full moons?"

"Stars?"

"Huh? No, not stars." She slowly caught on. They leant down and whispered in to his ear, " You are a wolf. Were. Werewolf."

"No." He said, trying to play it as a joke. At the look of disbelief on her face, he caved in. " How did you know?"

"Well, not just studying you... your name is literally Remus Lupin. Remus is the dude from Roman mythology, raised by wolves. Lupin is the moon. It kinda of adds up." She got out, " I don't care what you are. You could be a banshee, and you would still be my mate. Because you are my friend."

"That's me, the fucked up friend."

"Ah, just because you get hairy once a month doesn't mean you can take my title of 'the fucked up friend'. Nice try though." She walked to the door of the library, calling out as she left, "See you around Mooney."

Sirius Black walked past them as he walked towards Remus, "Mooney? That's a cute nickname. Bit flirtatious if you ask me."

"Well I didn't. And their with Jamie. Not me." He was teasing now. "Why? You jealous of little old me?"

Sirius felt frustrated at being called out so openly, yet he couldn't truly be jealous of Remus. Maybe he liked Natasha, not Mary. He knew he should dump Mary; he was stringing her along. But there was more problems that could come with that; Nat would be torn apart. Her best friend would have been dumped, but he was also her friend. Atleast, he hoped he was.

He had grown up with Natasha, they had always been together. Their families were always intertwined, in the same circle. The Black and McKinnon siblings would be taught the 'true morals of life' and which families they were allowed to talk to. From the cot, Sirius had been in awe of Natasha. Even as a young child, he had copied her mannerisms. Now they both would stroke their left thumb with their right ring finger when they were hiding something.

It was now Remus cleared his throat, "Earth to Sirius? Hello?"

"Sorry, I was gonna ask if you were busy. But you obviously look swamped... and kind of ill. No offense. Are you alright?"

"Hm yea. 'M fine, just a bit dizzy. I might go to the hospital wing."

"Oh okay, I'll walk you there." Sirius said, jumping to his feet, eager to help. "What do you want me to grab?"
