Waves crashed at you feet, as the moist sand squelched in between your toes. You looked out at the sea, thinking of him. Thinking of the day you couldn't save him, the day you're legs couldn't carry yourself quick enough to him, with the serum. Everyone told you it wasn't your fault. But you knew deep down it was.

You let out a deep sigh as you looked to your right, where Thomas was sat. You'd both been sat here together in silence, neither one of you had the courage to speak.

Your eyes wondering back to the sky, trying to make out any distinctive features in the clouds. Your hands sunk deeper into the sand as you leaned back on them further.

"They're up there."

Thomas' eyes flashed over to you, whilst yours stayed fixated on what was left of the clouds above you.

"They're up there together." You spoke up again.

"You mean..." Thomas trailed off, as he joined you at starting at the sky.

"Newt and Teresa." You finishes for him.

You had never really believed in God or an afterlife, well you never really had time to think about it. But something told you, they were up there.

"They wouldn't want us to be like this Tommy, blaming ourselves for their deaths. They'd want us to be happy, here."

You knew Thomas blamed himself for Teresa death, seeing as she had to help him up first, leaving not enough time for herself.

"I know, I just can't stop thinking about her... about that night." He continued.

You shuffled closer to him, as a wave broke against your feet, sending a shiver down your body.

"We've gotta try and be happy for them, it's what they'd want." You finished as your stared at your hands, thinking about Newt.

You moved your gaze up the sky again, which was now filled with stars. You hand followed as you pointed your index fingers at one of the stars.

"They're up there together. Safe. They have each other now." You ended, as your hand smacked the wet sand once more.

"We have each other." You turned to face him, you swear you could have seen a single tear sliding down his face.

He returned your gaze as he slung his arm over your shoulders and pulled you close.

You and Thomas has always been best friends, he'd always be able to comfort you.

You took a death breath before continuing, it hurt you to talk but you knew you had to be strong for the both of you.

"They're up there together, and we're down here together, and one day we'll all be reunited. But for right now, we're all safe, just in different places. Waiting to be reunited."

A tear dropped down your cheek, as you pictured Newt's dead body on the floor.

"They're up there waiting for us." That was all you could muster before more tears followed, streaming down your face, leaving a salty trail behind them.

You flopped your head onto Thomas' shoulder, squeezing your eyes shut, in hopes of shielding yourself from the pain.

Neither of spoke. You just sat there in silence, listening to crashing of the waves against the shore, and the chatter of people behind them. Just thinking.

As much as you wanted to forget Newt, you knew you couldn't. He was the one who kept you safe over the years, making sure to protect you from whatever stood in your way. Always at your side. You were now safe, but without him.
