After the whole Adelaine fiasco was sorted out, the day was finally ending on a relatively good note. The clouds started thickening up as sunset crept up on them and as much as Ray wanted to stay here with (Name) in his arms, sitting on the damp grass during the month of January wasn't the best thing to do. It was easy to catch a cold with the unpleasant weather and (Name) didn't need an ailment piled on her already high plate. Plus, he had to get her wounds treated as soon as possible. Not to mention, he didn't want her parents to start worrying about her absence, especially if they see her in her current state. There was just too much to do. A long but tranquil five minutes had passed since Adelaine had left the school premises and during that time, Ray did a thorough analysis of all of (Name)'s injuries. There were a few cuts and bruises littered on her face and arms but nothing too serious to be worried about. Ray then carefully checked (Name)'s head for concussions, fingers slowly combing through her hair to get a better look. No signs of concussions either. He felt the slightest bit of concern fizzle out of him, beyond thankful that (Name) managed to dodge any serious harm from her attackers. If that weren't the case, Ray would've gone on another rampage.
Ray remembered back to the time he had spotted a convenience store by the plaza across the street when he walked to school, located a few stores down from the food court area. It was the closest place where he could purchase some first aid materials, there wasn't any time to go any farther. He didn't want to wake up the dozing girl—he thought her sleeping face was just the cutest—so he hefted her up onto his back in a piggyback. He made sure that her head was comfortably resting on his shoulder to prevent disturbing her slumber, though it was already an upgrade from sleeping against the brick wall. With his school bag, her lunch bag, and her coat slung on his forearm, he began trekking towards the sidewalk with a tight grip on (Name).
As he was making his way down the block while trying not to shift around too much, Ray couldn't help but smile goofily to himself. They look like a couple and he loved it, Ray was going to savour the moment while it lasted. As he was approaching the crosswalk, he felt (Name) stir in her sleep. She emitted a low groan and lifted her head out of the crook of Ray's neck. "Mnmmh? Whas goin' onn?" (Name) slurred drowsily, her hand flying up to her head as soon as the heavy pounding returned to haunt her. "Rise and shine sleepyhead. You feelin' a lil' better?" Ray peered at the sluggish girl from the corner of his eye, internally gushing at how adorable they were in a groggy state. In all seriousness, he wouldn't mind going to bed to that sight and waking up to it in the future if the Universe permitted it. "Where'd they go?" she mumbled, noticing how eerily silent it was compared to fifteen minutes ago. Her ears weren't ringing as heavily anymore, the constant shrill chirp that went on in her head was adding fuel to the fire.
"They're gone, (Name). Don't worry. I've got you."
"Oh...I see..."
"Do you remember anything?"
"Honestly, I don't even know what happened. I remember feeling super lightheaded and it was getting hard to feel my surroundings, my ears felt clogged up and I couldn't hear very well...I was conscious but not, you know?"
"Uh-huh, go on."
"And I think I was on the brink of passing out when uh..."
"What? What's wrong?"
"I think it was 'cause I barely heard your voice and I felt super relieved. Like I didn't need to struggle to stay conscious after knowing you were there."
Euphoria bloomed in Ray's chest, she had just admitted to him that she felt safe when he was around. That she believed in him to handle things while she was out of commission, if (Name) weren't on his back he would've tackled her into a hug right then and there. He crossed the street with a happier beat in his step, approaching the convenience store with a smile he wasn't even trying to hide. "You can set me down now, I bet carrying me all the way here has you tired," (Name) pointed to a nearby bench that wasn't far from the store. "And leave you sitting alone outside? Not a chance," Ray huffed, his tone similar to one of a disappointed parent. He wasn't going to let her out of his sight, still on edge that Adelaine was lurking around the corner waiting to strike.
