(Name) sighed, dejectedly hitching the hood of her autumn coat on the metal hook in the locker. For the past few weeks, work and stress had been piled up way over her shoulders. Two months into grade twelve and she was already begging to go back to her freshman years. Day after day was occupied with schoolwork and completing post-secondary applications. She knew that senior year was going to be a big challenge—seeing that it was the last year of high school and her childhood—but it still came as a surprise. But it was more of a yikes-you're-almost-an-adult sort of surprise. Which did not feel good. She missed having free time now that it was gone, never realizing that her life could get even busier until it did. The years went by so fast, and for a moment, she regretted spending the majority of her childhood studying. There was so much she could've done but never got to do, all because she had the mindset of a wet blanket. Still, she didn't think too hard about it, knowing that she still had many years ahead of her to have fun.
But that wasn't what caused a downcast on her mood today.
Hunching over, she unzipped her bag and pulled out the three bulky textbooks she had to lug home the day before. Stretching out her sore back, she stood up and slid the books onto the small shelf provided at the top of the locker. Letting out another long sigh, she rolled out the back of her neck and rolled her shoulders. It really felt like she aged several years due to the constant work. "My my, look at you. What did I tell you about fixing your poor sitting posture?" (Name) groaned, dismissively waving her hand. There was only one person that it could be: Ray. She knew that he had constantly been reminding her to fix her the way she sat but refused every time, saying that it was already a habit. Ray chuckled at the girl's stubbornness, walking up to the girl to give her a quick peck. It was something that he did every morning he saw her, he would voice his declaration of love for her accompanied with a chaste kiss.
"You seem to be in a chipper mood today. More than usual."
"If I get to see you in the mornings, of course, I'd be happy. And 'cause you didn't spend any time with me yesterday. You just had to prioritize work over me."
If someone were to search up the word "pouty little boy", Ray's face would definitely be the first result to pop up. Laughing, (Name) enveloped him in a secure hug. "I'll spend more time with you today, promise." Ray hummed happily into her soft flowy hair, "Good, I was starting to feel lonely." Leaning against the wall of lockers, he watched (Name) put things back into her locker with the usual lovestruck look in his eyes. "You've been taking breaks right? Like I told you to?" he asked, knowing that (Name) often burned through assignments without stopping for a mental reset. She forced out a sheepish laugh, avoiding eye contact with Ray knowing that he could easily spot her lie. "But of course! Taking breaks left and right baby," she fibbed, hiding her face behind the notebook she was taking out of her locker.
Ray shook his head, taking the notebook out of her hands and holding it away from her grasp. "Very convincing, love," he smirked, bringing his fingers to his chin and tilting her head up towards him. (Name) broke out a strained smile, "I'm fine! Trust me! The work isn't even that bad. Like, I'm genuinely not stressing out as much as I thought I would." Dropping his hand down, he fiddled with the notebook he just took from her. "Then what's gotten you all down, baby?" He met her gaze, the look in his eyes hardening as his grip on the notebook tightened. "Don't tell me...someone's bothering you again? I haven't noticed anything but if-" "No! of course not! Everything was smooth sailing after you dealt with Sylvia. I'm not experiencing any hate or exclusion, my life's peachy!" (Name) insisted, her hands flying onto his big ones. It was true, everybody left (Name) alone after the whole fiasco the previous school year. There wasn't anyone crazy enough to pull a stunt like that, Sylvia and her crew were just outliers when it came to the rest of the school population. If they wished to follow Adelaine's footsteps the certainly did a good job doing it.
He softened up again, "That's good to hear, but you're still not telling me something." He tapped the top of her head with the notebook, "Let's hear it, otherwise, I won't know how to help you." Ray paused, eyes blinking quickly a few times. Shyly, he twiddled his thumbs in front of him as he stared at the ground. "...Unless you're not comfortable, then you should take your time. I didn't mean to force you," he murmured, timidly looking up at her with a mopey look in his eyes. (Name) held back the urge to coo, she could never get mad at a face like that. "I'm not uncomfortable sharing! Don't think that. It's just...it's a little embarrassing, you know?" she reassured him, giving a gentle prod on his puffed-up cheeks. "Whenever you're ready, love. We still have a bit of time before first period," he replied, holding her hand in his as he played around with her fingers. (Name) blushed, trying to find a way to put her thoughts into words.
She motioned for him to sit down with her, leaning her head on his chest as she began to speak. "I can't believe we're already in grade twelve. It feels kinda surreal, doncha' think? It feels like just a while ago that we were juniors," she mused, silently waving hello to a classmate of hers that just walked by the couple. Ray hummed in agreement, the noise creating a deep vibration through his chest. "What can I say, time flies when you're with the one you love," he replied, tracing small circles on her open palm. "And like, at the end of this school year, we'll be graduating. Going off to different schools," she laughed sadly. (Name) exhaled, "I'm gonna miss seeing you every day. It makes me kinda sad knowing that we'll be adults, doing our own things. We'll be splitting up- not relationship-wise but- you know what I mean." Ray laughed wholeheartedly at her stuttered speech, absolutely smitten over the fact that she thought about her future with him.
His laughter ceased, pulling (Name) into a tight hug. "Aww, you thinkin' 'bout me? That's sweet of you, love. But you don't need to worry a single hair on your pretty little head," he teased, caressing her hair gently to make a point "Why's that? Whatchu got up your sleeve, huh? Tell me!" (Name) pined. "Well, dear (Name), who said we were gonna be broken up so easily?" he stated. "I'm not gonna let some distance between us change anything, you know my eyes are only on you," he added gallantly, tilting over to press a smooch by the side of her neck. "You sound so sure about everything, are you not nervous at all?" (Name) asked, admiring how sure her significant other was about the coming future. "Of course I'm nervous. I'm worried about how I'll be able to survive without seeing you every day," he complained, small whines escaping his mouth as he hid his face in her hair.
(Name) tittered, "Of course that's all you're worried about. But like you said, we're gonna get through this together!" She sighed dramatically, hoping to cheer him up with a little compliment. "Although, not being able to see your handsome face will be a huge loss," she grouched sourly, falling over so that her top half was leaning on him. Ray snickered, a mischievous shine in his eye as he held her comfortably in his lap. "Ray? What's with that look?" (Name) eyed him warily, catching sight of the scheming glow on his features.
He smiled, head hanging closely above hers. "You'll be able to see my handsome face every day once I put a ring on your finger."
