Chapter 17: The Boat

Ethan's POV:
I stood up, my head throbbing. I heard a groan next to me and saw Mia standing up with her hand on her head.
"Are you ok?"
"Yeah, you?"
"I'm fine.... where's y/n?"
"I don't know but we need to find a way out of here"
"Really Mia? Y/n helped to get you... I think the least you can do is show concern" my words were laced with venom as I said them.
I rolled my eyes at Mia and walked forward. The boat was a wreck. Then I saw her. She was lying face down in what I think was mud. Her hair sprawled out everywhere.
"Y/n!!!"
I ran over to her but the thing that knocked us into the water wrapped around her and took her.
"What was that?"
Mia asked me.
"I don't know but it has y/n"
She sighed and walked forward.
'What is her deal!?'
I followed after her. Mia froze like she saw a ghost then continued walking.
"So....you and y/n..."
"What about us Mia"
"You two seem a lot closer"
"Well, when your wife lies to you and disappears...it's normal for a friend to comfort that person in pain. Am I wrong?"
"I guess you're right but I mean you guys are like really close now"
"Mia she's been my best friend for years...and weren't you the person who told me to move on in that last video you sent? So since I did move on... you're going to be mad about it now?"
She was quiet. She continued to walk and didn't talk for a while.
We then saw a corpse.
"He must have been hiding from something"
Mia wondered out loud. I just kept to myself. I didn't want to talk because of how she was acting.
'So what if I want to be with y/n...Mia left...she told me to move on!' I sighed quietly in frustration but continued walking, determined to find y/n.
I saw writing on the wall saying "she's not my child"....what? We continued walking and saw more writing. "She's inside me. She's inside everyone." What the hell is going on here?
We walked into a hallway and again Mia froze. Then a little girl appeared in front of us.
"Are you remembering?"
"What? What are you?"
"Where is y/n?" I spoke to the kid but it came out a lot louder than I intended.
All she did was giggle and walk away, so we continued walking. We dropped down into an area and there was the little girl again.
"You said we could be a family"
"What are you talking about"
'What on earth is she talking about?'
"You said!"
"Wait! Please!"
"I'm tired of waiting!"
And with that, the little girl ran off shutting the door behind her. We needed a fuse so we looked in the rooms.
There were some of those "googpies", as y/n would call them, crawling around. I went to grab the shotgun but didn't have any of my weapons.
"Shit...we need to be stealthy"
Mia just nodded her head and walked ahead.
We checked the rooms. Mia got a gun and we picked up ammo and herbs while avoiding the "goppies".
'I miss y/n'
I sighed with a frown on my face. Mia looked at me with a concerned look. She just stared at me.
"What?"
"Are you ok?"
"Just peachy" I almost sounded like y/n saying that. She was typically a sarcastic one at home, but with the situation we have been in these last 2 days she's been more serious.
I grabbed the fuse we needed and walked to the door that the little girl ran to.
'I'm coming for you y/n'

Mia's POV:
I was hurt. I know I told Ethan to move on but... I was hoping since he was here that would mean that him and I would go back to normal.
Don't get me wrong I love y/n...I mean she is a best friend almost a sister to me. But it still hurt. I know she's liked him for a while but never paid attention to it. I love Ethan and I want him to be happy! But it's hard to do that when it means him being happy with someone else.
Like I said I love y/n....but I can't help but be pissed with her and jealous.
I guess that's why I've been ignoring her the whole time she's been here...like pushing her away...now I feel guilty because she was a great friend to me and she most definitely didn't have to go through all of this to help me. Now...she could be dead for all I know.
I looked down at my feet, then back up. Ethan walked up the stairs ahead of me. We walked into a room and there sitting on the chair was Eveline.
In front of her was a tv.
"Watch it" she snapped.
"What? Why?"
"You need to remember so we can be a family"
I looked at her, then at Ethan. He shrugged but kept his eyes on Eveline.
I sighed and turned to the tv putting in the tape.
*video*
I stood next to...my old partner?
"Alan, you're getting worse"
"She must have infected me during the attack. And I'm too far gone anyway. But it serves me right. It's my fault she got out"
"Yeah, it is your fault. But that doesn't mean I'm gonna let you die"
'Damn I was a little harsh'
I stared at the screen watching Alan talk.
"She didn't attack you?"
"It's part of her imprinting protocol. I can't believe this is happening"
"Here, take it. It has her tissue samples. You find her – you fix this"
He handed me a vile and I took it from his pale hands.
I reloaded the gun I had.
"Ok, Evie. Where are you?"
I then read a document...I don't remember it. I looked at my codex and it told me how far Evie was. I walked towards her.
"She's close"
I walked into a room and followed the watch. Then I walked into a kitchen. There was a huge pile of black slime on the floor.
"She's vomiting... Damn, I'll have to reset"
I pushed a few buttons and continued walking when I got a call.
"How's it going?"
"She's vomiting. Far more in excess of her body mass"
"Oh great. We're gonna be seeing a lot more of her ugly friends if this keeps up. Alright, we need to find her and fast. This is getting out of hand"
I hung up and walked to the elevator.
'Wait...it's all starting to come back'
I looked over my shoulder and saw Ethan staring at the screen with furrowed eyebrows. He was confused...and I get that...I lied to him for so long about my job and I now started to feel bad about it.
I looked back and saw that I was calling Alan.
"Alan. I think she's on the other side of this door, but I don't have a key"
"Try to melt down the lock. You're on the bottom level, right? Check our luggage"
I walked into a room and picked up a blowtorch.
(I looked up what they're called and that's what it said but I don't know I didn't want to say pink liquid thingy 😂)
I walked back to the door that was locked and melted the lock.
Evie then started talking to me.
"Are you mad at me, mommy?"
"Evie, I'm not mad. Wait, what did you call me?"
"I don't want to live at the lab anymore. I want a house. And I want you to be my mommy"
"Ok, Evie, I'll be your mommy. Just come back with me right now, Ok? Where are you, Evie? Evie, wait!"
She ran away. I started to follow her through the boat and called Alan to update him.
"Did you find her?"
"Yes, but she ran off. She's making more friends, Alan. Those things are everywhere"
"I told you so" he started to cough.
"Are you ok?"
I know I was concerned because he was my partner and has been for a long time. I remember watching him die in front of me...I remember making that video for Ethan...I hate myself for lying to him all those years but I loved him too much to tell him....instead I ended up hurting him. I looked down.
The emergency system started to blare and I looked back up. I was holding explosives putting them down to kill Evie's friends.
On the wall it said that Evie was upstairs so I made my way there. I tried to call Alan but he wouldn't answer.
I kept making my way through the boat and eventually got to Alan.
"How did you get here?"
"Where's Evie?"
"She's out of control. Without the treatments, she's deteriorating"
"Well, it's a good thing I'm already dying" he started coughing again.
"Don't say that"
"She trusts you. That little bitch, she never–" he stopped talking and started to wave his hands in the air panicking.
"I didn't mean to call you that, Evie"
I walked towards him trying to calm him down.
"She's trying to take control. You have to fight her"
He starts to vomit the black slime.
"Eveline, stop! Stop right now!"
I ran up to Alan.
"Don't touch me!"
He yells and starts to scream out in pain. I fall over and pass out for a few minutes.
I then get up and make my way to the next room. I grab the laptop and make the video.
"Ethan. You were right. I did lie to you. I shouldn't have, but... All I can say is that if you get this... Stay away. Forget that you ever knew me. Have a good life"
Eveline comes into the room.
"We'll be together forever"
Then she makes the ship explode sending me into the water.
The video ends.
"Now do you remember?"
"Yes, Eveline, I remember"
"Can we be a family like before?"
"No, Evie. We can't be a family. We were never a family. We will never be a family"
'After all she's done!? Why would I be her family!!'
"Then I don't need you anymore" she laughed loud and disappeared.
I sighed.
'We're coming y/n...don't worry'

Ethan's POV:
We wandered around the boat...there was just so much. I was mad at Mia for lying to me about her job but shrugged it off and walked. There was a security camera monitor and I went over to look at it.
My breath caught in my throat.
"Y/n" I whispered.
She was stuck inside a giant thing of the black goop which I now knew was vomit.
"I hope we make it in time"
I looked at the screen.
"Mia she's at the bottom level"
She walked to the screen looking.
"Ok, let's get moving"
We walked around grabbing things that we needed to make the elevator work.

Finally, we made it to the bottom.
"We're almost there y/n"
All I wanted to do was save her so I could hold her and take her home.
We fought off the goopies and made our way to y/n.
Eventually, we got to the room she was in and I ran to her only to be pushed back by the little girl.
'Why that little bi-'
"I need you to do something for me"

Y/n's POV:
I opened my eyes but everything looked strange...like I was wearing glasses they weren't the right prescription.
"Y/n. Y/n."
I turned and saw Jack and flinched.
"I know. I know. I know- I'm not going to hurt you. Hell I never would have if I could have helped it"
"What do you mean?"
"I'm not killer hun. Neither is Marguerite, nor my boy Lucas"
'....well....'
"Or even Zoe here. That girl Eveline, she did this"
I saw Zoe stand up and move and I felt bad that we didn't help her...hell I felt bad for all of them.
"What the hell is she? What did she do to you?"
"She infected us with her gift. That's what she calls it. I found her near a busted-out tanker in the bayou. Everything changed after that"
"So she infects you, and then she takes control?"
I started feeling bad for the Bakers...Jack actually seemed very nice. I frowned as he talked.
"No, not exactly hun. She just- she forces her way into your mind and your soul and...you can't fight back. You are connected to her and you can't resist the urge to...you're a different person after that"
My heart started to tighten. These people were just a normal family and got completely ruined by some kid. I just wanted to hug them but couldn't.
"So Mia sent Ethan that message because of Eveline?"
"Listen, the girl just wants a family of her own. She's the key alright? You find her and you stop her. Y/n free my family-please"
I nodded and everything went black again.
'I will avenge you and you're family Jack...don't worry'

Ethan's POV:
"Eveline stay away from her!" Mia yelled.
"Why? She made it so he didn't love you... I can make him love you" started to laugh.
'I'm not afraid to hurt a kid'
"Don't touch her" I said with a glare.
"Silly I told you I'm not going to hurt her" she turned to me with an evil grin then back to y/n starting to walk towards her.
"Don't you dare" Mia said getting in front of y/n.
"Or what you're not my mommy remember?"
She disappeared again and Mia ran to y/n freeing her.
"Mia? Ethan? How?"
Mia held onto y/n's arms she could steady herself. She then wrapped y/n into a hug.
"I'm so sorry for how I've been acting..." she whispered.
"Um ye-yeah it's ok"
Y/n looked confused but returned the hug.
"You two need to get out of here. Take this" she gave y/n a vile.
"Wait what are you doing?"
She pulled my arm as I asked this.
"Saving your lives" she pushed us out the door and shut it.
"You need to go I won't be able to resist for much longer. Now, go kill that little bitch." She started to look sickly... like how she looked when she cut off my hand.
"Mia wait! No!" The window got covered in that vomit and I turned around.
I looked at y/n and saw tears in her eyes.
I pulled her into me and hugged her.
"I saw Jack...I feel so bad for them E...they didn't want to hurt us but they couldn't help it"
"Hey, hey" I ran my hands through her hair.
"We'll avenge them...ok?"
She sniffed and nodded her head. I let go and cocked my gun.
"Ok little bitch, where the fuck are you?"
