The next day potions was the first subject on our schedule, so Alison, Blaise and I made our way to the classroom in the dungeons.

Like every other class, this one really was something. We had some classes together with the Vipers and other separated.

Potions was one of the classes we had by ourselves, so that the other unit wouldn't know which poisons we were currently learning about.

"Good morning, class."

Professor Slughorn had entered the room with a welcoming smile on his face.

„I know I'm not allowed to tell you what I've worked on with the Vipers but let me tell you that they are very well prepared. If you wish to stand a chance against them, this is your chance to enhance your potions skills."

The class sighed, as everyone was annoyed by the other team always being one step ahead of us.

"We'll start todays class with a basic exercise." He held a tiny black bottle between two fingers and showed it around.

"I'll give you one clue, before drinking it and the first one to brew an antidote for this unknown poison, gains 50 house points."

I was on the edge of my seat, hoping I would be able to solve the riddle he was about to give us. The other ones seemed to prepare their selves as well.

"Never able to see the sun, it's still what I require the most. The blood I shed is never red, but brothers and sisters among us are. What am I?" he carried the tiny bottle to his lips and drank it in one sip. The whole class had their eyes on Professor Slughorn, as nothing happened.

And then it began. His body started shaking and his eyes were teared open. The class started to panic, and I forced myself to think as heard as possible.

The sun is what it requires the most, so it was obviously a plant, but how was it not able to see the sun? My thoughts were spinning, and I looked around in panic, but no one else seemed to have the solution yet, either.

Which plants didn't see the sun? Something under water? I went through all the water plants I knew in my head, but none fit the description.

And then it clicked. He was talking about a nightshade plant. From there it was easy.

The fruit juice wasn't red, so I could rule out a lot of the classics. The only one remaining was the black nightshade. I wasn't 100% sure, but it was worth a try. I grabbed my potions book and opened it on the page I needed.

I quickly glanced through the instructions and was relieved that it seemed manageable.

I ran towards the shelf and took out the ingredients I needed. By now a couple of other students seemed to have solved the riddle as well, as they were also gathering ingredients or paging through their potions books in a hurry.

A couple of minutes later I was almost done, and the potion colour described in my book matched my brew exactly.

I made my way to Professor Slughorn's chair and noticed, that by now white foam had escaped his lips, so I hurried when I infused a couple of drops into his mouth.

I took a step back and waited for any kind of reaction.

After a short moment of silence, he swallowed and came back to awareness.

"Well done, miss l/n. You are rewarded with 50 points."

I was relieved I hadn't killed my teacher and made my way back to my desk.

Professor Slughorn discussed with us how to recognize nightshades and where they could be found, before dismissing us.

My friends congratulated me on my result, before we made our way to the dark arts classroom. This class was taught by headmaster Snape and it was Pythons and Vipers mixed.
