"The number you are calling is currently busy."
Atul was exhausted of hearing the same thing again and again. It had been a month but Atul had not heard Amaya. He could fathom her emotions after all, he realized that she was devastated after knowing the greed of his parents. He knew she was a beautiful person who deserved the best instead of humiliation from his parents.
Every time Atul called her, he felt elated whenever he could hear the bell ringing but within seconds when a single ring was replaced with a busy custom message, he remembered he was blocked. He kept on calling her thrice a day with a hope that she would unblock him or call him back to have a conversation but it had never
happened. Over the last month, he had tried myriads of ways to contact her but Amaya had closed all the doors for him.The memory of that ill-fated day when his parents ruined his life was till afresh in his mind. Currently driving towards his friend's house. Planning to meet his only friend in Delhi who knew everything about his family background, Atul closed his eyes remembering the unfortunate day. He was stuck at the red light of one of the busiest roads of Delhi during the peak hours of the day.
After his parents had left, he had called Amaya but much to his disappointment, the girl who had loved him from the bottom of her heart had not received the call. He had called her again only to realize she had blocked him. Frantically he had opened his WhatsApp to text her up but he was broken beyond repair when he could not see her Display Picture. He was not a fool to realize, he was blocked on all social media platforms.
Atul unlocked his phone and re-read the last text of Amaya. She had sent that heart wrenching message just before blocking him. Reminiscing the old memories, he felt frustrated at the twists and turns of his life. He was missing those morning walks, sweet talks and fervent kisses they had shared in this short span of time. He was missing his Amaya.
He wondered if Amaya felt missed him too or her anger had overpowered her. He was drowned in the sea of thoughts when he was warmly greeted by the green signal. He needed an advice about what to do. He was clear that he could not live like this. Having dreamt of all the moments of his life with Amaya, he felt like a sinner in hell. He missed her terribly and moving on was not an option for him. He needed her back in his life and he was sure his friend would help him at all costs.
On the other hand, Amaya was sitting in the balcony after a hectic day at work. The continuous presentations, intensive data analysis and hectic workload had been giving her an headache. Over the last month, Amaya had bagged a plethora of projects in her kitty. She had drowned herself in work just to forget the pain of staying away from Atul. Having made plans of spending her whole life with him, she was badly craving to meet him, hug him and kiss him but unfortunately she was bound to do no such thing ever again.
In her lap laid the neatly packed maroon coloured maxi dress which Atul had gifted her on her birthday. Her dark brown eyes were filled with tears as she caressed the hand written note stuck on it. She had tried the dress once and she had planned to wear it on their next date but before she could do that, the circumstances had forced her to break off her relationship with him.
She craved to receive his phone call or unblock him everyday but she did not want to put him into a situation where he was supposed to choose between her and his parents. She knew Atul was a decent man who was against dowry. She was proud of Atul who respected her and loved her for who she was. She was aware of the fact that he always took pains to wipe out her insecurities and made her happy. She hated herself for not clearing the misunderstandings and adding misery to his life but she was helpless.
Amaya had grown up with her grandparents and she strongly believed it is the responsibility of children to take care of their old parents just like parents look after their young kids. She had strongly opposed the demand of fifty lakhs in dowry because she could never imagine enjoying herself when her parents struggled to meet the hospital expenses in case of any medical emergency.
In the similar way, Amaya expected Atul to take care of his parents no matter how wrong they were. She knew she would never succumb to their demand and hence, they would never be happy if Atul would choose to marry her. Thus, she made the decision of staying away from Atul because she did not want herself to be the cause of strain in Atul's relationship with his parents. Amaya had no option except to lament at her fate and pray for well-being of Atul.
Manohar and Nirmala were sitting in their bedroom. Their humble abode was always filled with joyous giggles and philosophical conversations but one incident had changed everything. Their confident daughter was turned into a zombie with dark circles under her eyes. The girl who was had the potential of lightening the tensed atmosphere was today, heartbroken. The girl who valiantly faced all the rejections in her life was running away from her peculiar love life.
"Manohar, Gattu is in terrible pain", Nirmala voiced out her concern as her husband flipped the TV channel.
"What should I do?", Manohar mumbled. He had tried everything to cheer up his daughter but it seemed as if she had donated her smile to Atul.
Nirmala got furious at her husband who was concentrating on the random TV channel instead of her concerns. Glaring at him, she snatched the remote from him and lashed out at him, "Manohar, our daughter is not eating properly. She is overworking to mend her heart and you just need to watch this stupid TV".
Manohar let out an exhausted sigh and asked, "Nirmala, what you want me to do?" focusing all his attention on his wife who had switched off the television and tossed the remote away.
"Mr. Bansal called you two weeks ago. I want you to talk with him." Nirmala ordered leaving Manohar flabbergasted.
"O! That scoundrel would be calling me to invite in his son's engagement. Do you want me to attend it?" taunted Manohar sarcastically getting irritated at his wife's demand.
"Come on, Manohar. We need to bring our daughter's happiness back." Nirmala tried to coax her husband. She wanted him to talk with Manoj Bansal and fix the alliance even if meant paying dowry. Her heart pained looking at her heartbroken daughter.
"Why do you think Atul is getting married? He loves our daughter." Nirmala challenged her sarcastic husband speaking fondly about Atul.
Letting out a scornful laugh, Manohar muttered, "If he loved her, he should have talked with her."
"You know our Gattu, Manohar. She must have blocked him up." Nirmala countered still taking side of Atul which irritated her husband.
With immense frustration in his voice, Manohar spoke, "In which world do you live, Nirmala? She had blocked him, not us. Remember when I found they were dating, he came to our house to convince us. Where is he now?"
Nirmala closed her eyes in despair. She agreed with her husband. "Perhaps, he is ashamed to face us, Manohar", she still tried to reason.
"No more discussion on this, Nirmala. I have left everything upon the God. Let's hope for the best of our daughter." Manohar said wrapping his arm on her shoulder while her head rested on his shoulder.
