“Who is it, Gattu?” boomed Manohar’s voice while Amaya stood like a log glaring at the man standing at the door. The sweet and sober man she had fallen for had lost his charm but Amaya had many more issues to think of. She was concerned of the reaction of her father right now.
“Get out", she hissed as she tried to close the door. Atul was quick enough to lean on the door frame otherwise Amaya would have kicked him out of her house once again.
Receiving no reply from his daughter, Manohar walked to the living room and was flabbergasted to see Atul leaning on his door shamelessly.
Atul, on the other hand, was just looking innocently at Amaya and for a moment, he had forgotten the purpose of his visit. With a sweet smile plastered on his lips, he was challenging her to try pushing him out and closing the door at his face through the gestures of his eyes at which Amaya was paying no attention.
Atul was busy admiring his Cupcake after a long month while Amaya was fuming in anger still not being able to deny the magnetic pull of his captivating persona.
“Why are you here?” boomed Manohar’s angry voice breaking his trance. Coming out of his reverie, Atul recollected himself and fumbled to find words, “Uncle, umm... Sir...”
“Get out, you scoundrel”, shouted Manohar attracting attention of his wife who came running towards her husband at the sudden commotion.
“Atul", she exclaimed gaping in surprise. The man whose father had rejected her daughter was standing at her door after a month of that incident. With all suspicions running in her mind, Nirmala wondered the reason of his sudden arrival.
“Uncle, I am sorry”, Atul finally spoke feeling guilty to build up thick tension inside Amaya’s house. He felt culpable for having turned the lovely girl's life upside down.
“Gattu, go inside", suggested Manohar and Amaya followed the order emotionlessly. She sighed in exasperation as she mumbled, “Atul, please leave this house and my life", before rushing towards her room. The half-eaten paneer parantha was lying in her plate but she had lost all her appetite. Shutting the door, she leaned on the door frame inside her bedroom as she huffed and cried her heart out.
On the other hand, Manohar strode towards the main door and bellowed brusquely, “Out!”
“Uncle, I want to apologize on the behalf of my father", Atul finally pleaded gulping in fear.
Manohar was baffled at the delayed apology. The day his daughter had thrown Atul out, Manohar had pitied him because he expected Atul to make a wise decision but today, when Atul had barged inside his house after a month, Manohar could not help but think negatively. Today, he could not welcome Atul’s presence in his house. Despite, Manohar wanted to act civil, the heartbroken demeanor of his daughter did not allow him to be polite.
“Let me guess, your father could not get a bride whose father was ready fifty lakhs", taunted Manohar sarcastically glaring at him while Atul had his eyes bowed down in shame. Nirmala, who was present inside the room was horrified at her husband’s anger.
“No", Atul exclaimed as he wanted to explain that he despised the idea of dowry and he wanted to marry Amaya but Manohar interrupted him with another sassy reply. With sarcasm laid in his tone, Manohar had said, “Okay, so you are here to invite us in your wedding where you will be flaunting the hefty dowry. I am afraid to tell you that I won’t even bless you because your family can just value money above relationships, emotional attachment and character.”
“Uncle, I value Amaya more than anything and I am against dowry", stated Atul firmly only to get a sardonic laugh in reply along with some nasty glares Manohar was throwing at him.
“Son, I am sorry to know that you were suffering from amnesia since the last month", hollered Nirmala who was shocked at Atul’s revelation. As much as she wanted to have a courteous conversation with the guest, she was not able to control her anger. “Moron, get out of my house this instant", she bellowed.
“Aunty, I was ashamed to face everyone", Atul mumbled as he took out his phone and showed the screenshot of the last text Amaya had sent him. Reluctantly Manohar took the phone and zoomed the screen to read the lengthy message and he stiffened reading the disappointing words.
Manohar was proud of his daughter when he read,
My parents are proud of me. I am not a burden to them.
The old man was satisfied with his upbringing as he realized that he and his wife had raised his daughter well. He was marvelled at his daughter’s commendable strength to take a wise decision keeping her emotions aside when he came across,
I don’t want to ruin my self-respect for the sake of love.
He was shattered to know that his daughter was not able to face him because she was guilty of falling in love with a wrong man as his eyes were stuck at,
I am ashamed of facing my parents because of you.
Manohar was ashamed to have failed as a father. He realized his daughter was killing herself every day in guilty while he failed to understand her trauma. He knew she was heartbroken but he had never thought that Amaya was guilty for falling in love.
Manohar read the complete message. As much as he was proud of his daughter’s decision of choosing her parents, his heart ached when he read,
WE ARE OVER.
Manohar returned the phone back with a heavy heart while Atul mumbled, “Uncle, I know I should have apologized earlier but I lacked courage. While talking with a friend, I realized that Amaya was not only disheartened but she was not letting out her feelings.”
This time Manohar chose to listen him while Nirmala was constantly looking at her husband. Atul took a deep breath and confessed, “She had blocked me that day and we never talked after my father insulted you. I am proud of her for taking a stand for herself but trust me, I was not involved into anything. I opposed my father and we had a quarrel.”
Manohar gave him a curt nod while Atul contemplated if he should speak further or not. Fumbling through his words, Atul mumbled, “Uncle, I want to apologize. I never imagined that my father would ruin things. I genuinely like Amaya and I want you to accept my apology.”
Atul pleaded as he joined both of his hands before Amaya’s father who just said, “Get inside", finally inviting Atul inside the house for a lengthy conversation.
