With a thumping heart that was ready to jump out of his ribcage, Atul was standing in front of Amaya’s humble abode with sweat beads covering his forehead. He was terribly frightened to face her parents after the incorrigible deeds of his father. It was eleven in the morning on a lousy weekend and he had expected everyone to be at home.

He was looking forward to talk with Amaya and tell her that he loved her dearly. He wanted to tell her parents that he had nothing to do with his father’s demand of dowry. He was ready to take all the insults that were supposed to come in his way because he knew his father had ruined everything.

Letting out an exasperated sigh, Atul gathered all his strength to ring the doorbell. Chanting the name of Lord Hanuman and deciding to visit the temple with an oblation of ladoos along with Amaya, Atul finally rang the doorbell. With his eyes closed and bobbling Adam’s apple, Atul looked like a timid chicken whose neck was to be twisted by the butcher.

Amaya and her parents were enjoying their breakfast on a lazy Sunday morning. With her favorite paneer paranthas laid on her plate and a tangy coriander chutney, Amaya was feeling lucky to have amazing parents who were trying to cheer her up since the last month.

Having spent her nights crying over Atul, Amaya had got dark circles under her dark brown eyes. Every day her heart craved to unblock his number and talk to him at least once but she had refrained herself to do so. She had realized Atul would fight for her but she did not want him to strain his relationship with his parents. At the same time, Amaya was afraid that her parents would eventually succumb to the greed of his parents and she was firmly against the practice of dowry.

Having taken extra projects, Amaya was overworking. Her colleagues had begun noticing her when she worked during the lunch breaks and she was getting frustrated with their comments,

“Madam is working all the time to impress the boss and grab another promotion".

She had lost considerable weight and her appetite along with her beautiful smile. The salty tears were her only companion whenever she left her bed at eight in the morning after all, there was no reason of morning walks anymore. She hated to look at her mobile phone after all, it reminded her of her lost love, Atul.

The memories cherished with him were still afresh in her mind despite, all the pictures they had clicked together were lying in the recycle bin of her laptop since she lacked courage to permanent delete those files.

Having lost her interest, Amaya was living a robotic life. Getting up in the morning, she used to rush to her office and engross herself with the commitments at work. She had been carrying her work at home and often her nights were spent weeping over her separation with Atul.

During the melancholic nights, Amaya used to read and re-read the last message she had sent to him before cutting all her contacts with Atul. She knew she had been harsh onto him and it was quite unreasonable to blame him for the mistake of his father but had taken that firm step to make sure that she would not mellow down and talk with him.

Amaya was ready to walk on the difficult path. She was ready to weep and cry for her unrequited love just to avoid all the complications. Amidst her sorrow, she witnessed her parents trying hard to cheer her up. She felt sorry for her parents and she loathed herself for being an inconsiderate daughter who was neglecting her parents but she was stuck with her heartbreak.

Last week when her mother’s blood pressure dropped, Amaya was guilt-stricken as realization dawned upon her. She was ashamed of herself for failing as a daughter. She realized that the happiness of her parents lied in her joy. Despite it was hard for her to forget everything and overcome her heartbreak, she decided to stay happy for her parents. She did not want her parents to worry about her and hence, she began spending time with them and feign that she had finally moved on.

Manohar could see through the facade his daughter was putting up and he had been cursing Atul as well as his family every day for snatching away the happiness of his beloved daughter. Nirmala, on the other hand, was overjoyed to see her daughter getting back on track. She was expecting Amaya to find the love of her life. The old woman realized Atul had perhaps, moved on as he had not tried to contact them since a month but she had faith in mankind. She still had dreams to see Amaya getting married to a lovely guy and finding joy in her life.

With cackles of joy and funny jibes at the breakfast table, Aggarwals were enjoying their breakfast when the doorbell rang and Amaya got up to see who was there to ruin their weekend. She despised the guests who chose to visit at the weekends as being a working woman, she wanted to spend the lovely weekends with her family.

Amaya had a lot much to catch up with her parents since she had decided to be a responsible and lovely daughter to them after lamenting over her decimated love life since the last month. Cursing the uninvited guest early in the morning, she headed towards the main door of the house with a fake smile plastered on her face.

Her breath hitched as her face turned red in anger. Looking at a grief-stricken Atul who had been sweating all the while, Amaya had a gush of emotions overflowing inside her. She stood cluelessly at the door wondering what Atul was doing at her house.

Letting out a exasperated sigh, she decided to be strong and push him from her life. As much as he was important for her, she could not deny the fact that his greedy father had insulted her parents. Atul, on the other hand, was shocked to look at the pale, grief-stricken state of Amaya. Her dark brown expressive eyes that glowed with a radiant twinkle were crying hard after being drowned in the sea of big, dark circles. The girl whom he loved had lost her gorgeous smile because of him.

“What are you doing here?” she fumbled angrily trying to keep a stoic face while the treacherous tears brimmed in her dark brown eyes. Her quavering voice broke his trance of thoughts and he stood voicelessly with his eyes bowed down in shame as he did not know what to speak.
