Angie joins her classmates for Biology, Mary Sue's enthusiasm has infected her. Her best friend, after all, is right, she has to put this childish teacher's pet attitude aside, and learn how to be stand up for herself, even if it means going against the rules, for once. She smiles as she takes out her notebook, she feels a presence by her side. She turns slowly and she sees long pale fingers, a metal ring on his middle finger.
Fuck
The hell is going on, lately?
She does not need to turn around to see that Hockstetter is sitting next to her, but why? She sneaks a glance over her shoulder, half of student are yet to come, many seats are free, this is all very strange, she even forgot Patrick was in her same Biology course, she hadn't seen him in class for a long time. What Angie does not realize, is that Patrick perceives her fear very well, just like the prey he used to catch last summer, and he feels pure fear from her.
And he is excited about that.
His green eyes rest on her little hands, her nails, painted with lilac nail polish, the butterfly-shaped ring, her long hair.
Angie pretends everything is fine, and during the first part of the lesson, absolutely nothing happens.
See Angie? There is nothing wrong with it, he just sat next to you because he hadn't found a seat, you and your paranoia, it's okay, you will go to Bowers house later, and everything will be fine, tonight you will make yourself a hot chocolate with Richie and you will laugh at this.
Oh, how wrong she was.
"So, the cells lining the blood vessels belong to the category of..." The professor is teaching, the girl hears his voice, but she cannot focus on it, she looks at her notebook, she wrote Cells with the red pen, the rest of the paper is completely blank. When did it happen? She starts thinking, everything started when Bowers stole her book, yes, because she was protecting Richie. Actually, it started the day after, simply because she provoked him with that stupid sentence, if only she had kept her mouth shut...people called his brother Trashmouth, but she was not any better.
All of a sudden, Angie feels a cold hand gently pressing on her thigh, under the hem of her skirt.
"Hey beauty, do you have a pen?"
Angie screams and jumps, she was completely focused on her thoughts. She turns to him, she had never seen him so close to her, she even realizes he is not unattractive at all. On the contrary, despite that creepy smirk on his face, he is actually good looking. Very creepy but very attractive at the same time.
"Miss Tozier, we're not at the circus, you know, when I speak I generally want my students to shut up..."
Angie feels embarassed, she blushes, while the rest of the students burst out laughing.
"I'm sorry sir, I saw a spider. I'm very sorry sir, it won't happen again, sir" The teacher gives her a dirty look, and he turns around.
"Damn .. I wouldn't mind if you talked to me like that too, for sure" Patrick whispers to her, smirking.
She opens her eyes wide ("What the hell is wrong with him?" ) She quickly passes him a pen, their fingers touch, and she retracts them, without holding gaze.
After the lesson, she doesn't ask for her pen back, she just runs away when the bell rings.
Mary Sue is waiting for her in front of her locker.
"Hey, look I wrote the plan during English Litterature"
"You should have listen to the professor"
"Sorry, mom" Mary Sue rolls her eyes, she focuses on Angie's face, "Are you ok?"
"Yes, no, well...I'm just a bit nervous" she says, it is not a real lie, she has not been feeling that bad since her first dance recital, when he found herself alone on the stage, in front of a crowd of spectators, and she was paralyzed with fear "You looked like a completely idiot" as Richie liked to remind her, every now and then, to be sure she will not forget one of the worst embarassing moments of her life.
"Ok, so, first we will wait for some minutes...okay... no, we won't walk down the main street, trust me..."
Angie nods.
"Isn't it dangerous with that maniac around? "
"No, kids often go missing while they're alone, besides, don't worry, I always have the pepper spray my dad gave me"
They stay in the schoolyard for a while.
Richie screams "Angie, we are going to the Quarry to throw rocks! Do you want to come?"
"No thanks, Richie, we will study in the library"
"Boooring" Her brother comments.
"Oh, hi Eddie"
Eddie blushes and whispers "Hi".
"Oh God, poor boy, what happen?" Eddie has a bruise on his forehead, "Oh, nothing, we were just playing at the Sewers.
"Be careful next time, guys!"They arrive at the Bowers' farm, that is on the same street in which Mike Hanlon, one of Richie's friends, and member of the Loser's club, lives.
"Oh my God I can't believe we're doing it!" Angie says.
"Belch's car is already here" Mary Sue whispers.
Henry comes out from the frontal door, Belch starts the engine, the Trans Am disappears front their view.
"I would say one hour will be enough"
When they leave, Mary Sue checks under the mat and she finds a spare key.
"Ok Angie, I'm staying out, in case someone arrives, I will warn you, ok?"
"Can't we reverse the roles?"
"Angelica we don't have much time! Hurry up!"
"Ok,ok!"
Angie holds her breath as the door creaks behind her, she holds her breath. It is, indeed, a beautiful house, with nice and comfortable furniture, unfortunately, the place looks neglected, there are beer cans and ash trays. On a shelf, she sees the photo of a beautiful smiling lady, with a little dark blonde baby. How different Henry looked in that photo, Angie had never seen that smile. She looks at the woman and wonders where she is. Many people in Derry spread rumors about the fact that she run away (Of course, with a husband like Butch Bowers!) All Derry knows the violent attitude of her Henry's dad, how to blame her. She notices that there are only photos from his childhood, it is like life froze 10 years ago.
But she does not have time for that reflection, her time is passing.
And she has a book to find.
"Mmm...where should I start?"
