Jane backed towards the stairs holding Helena's hand. The Souls surrounded the house keeping them trapped.

"Helena, go upstairs into the second room on the right. I'll join you in a bit."

"But mom--"

"Go!!"

Helena teared up a bit and ran upstairs. She entered the room her mom told her to and found it contained only a bed, a dusty chest on the other side of the room, and the walls were cluttered with mirrors. She walked towards the chest and slowly opened it. It contained the many weapons that Jane had mentioned that she and her friends had used.

But why is it here? What happened to her friends? Wait, if all the weapons are in here that means mom's unarmed and facing a bunch of monsters!!!

Helena grabbed a knife from the chest and ran out the room.

Jane looked into the eyes of a Soul in the shape of lion. It snarled and walked towards slowly, as if taunting its prey. She slowly walked backwards toward one of the desks behind her and opened one of the drawers. The Soul noticed her and pounced. Jane pulled out a gun and shot it in the chest. It fell just half a foot in front of her. She grabbed another gun, bullets, and a knife from other drawers and walked outside.

She reloaded one gun a held the other in her belt. She snuck on a

As Helena was about to walk down the stairs and raven Soul flew in her face knocking her on the floor. It was bigger than a regular raven and its claws were razor sharp. It dove at her but she dodged it making the raven make a hole where her head was. It cawed a high pitched screeching noise that made Helena cover her ears. The window in the hallway opened a whole flock of raven Souls flew in like a swarm. They surrounded Helena starting to peck and claw at her. She screamed loud enough for Jane to hear over the caws of the birds.

Jane heard the scream and ran up the stairs reloading her gun. When she got to the top she took aim at the birds and shot most of them down. When she ran out if bullets she pulled out her knife and started to slice down the birds. Helena fumbled for her knife and stabbed one crow in the chest. By the time she got her knife out of its body, Jan had already killed all of them.

They both stood there for awhile, Helena breathed heavily while Jane kicked away the carcasses of the Souls. After tossing them aside Jane kneeled down next to Helena.

"Are you okay? They scratched you pretty badly." She traced a scar one had slashed across her face from her left temple to her cheek. Heena grimaced, "Come on. Let's get that bandaged up."

She held out her hand and helped her back into the room. Helena sat down on the bed while Jan rummaged through the chest for a First-Aid kit. She pulled it out and cleaned her wound with peroxide making her wince, cleared away the blood, she wrapped the bandage around her head and put the contents back in the kit.

"There, all better." She put the kit back in the chest and grabbed more knives and ammo. Helena looked into one of the many mirrors at her bruised bandaged face. She frowned. "I look like a mummy. In the movies guys with scars make them look cooler."

Jane chuckled. "It's not about where it is, it's about making sure it doesn't kill you. If that Soul had cut you at a different angle, you would have a scar across your eye. It may look cool, but it hurts."

"Oh well then." Helena sighed. "You were pretty cool out there, killing those things left and right. While I barely killed one. Can you teach me how to fight?"

Jane stopped smiling and gave her a sad look. "I don't think you're ready yet. I wasn't..."

"But mom I need to know. Like that guy said, in this world you have to learn to kill to survive. And I'm willing to learn."

Jane looked at her with a pitiful gaze then sighed. "I guess you can learn some things since the situation is bad." Helena smiled and hugged her.

"Now I have another question, why aren't the Souls getting in here?"

"You see this room is protected against Souls. Over the time I spent with them... I learned that Souls were repelled by mirrors. They run whenever they see one. We didnt know why, but it gave us and advantage."

She got some more knives and handed them to Helena. "Come on, let's teach you how to use one. Here get a grip on it like this," Jane demonstrated, "and throw!" She threw the knife at the door and it landed straight in the door.

"See, nothing to it!" Helena stared at her mom with wide eyes and lowly tried to copy what her mom did. She threw the knife but it hit the door with a thump and fell to the ground.

"Think of it like throwing a dart."

"I was never good at darts in the first place. I think I'll stick to guns."

Jane pulled a handgun from the chest and loaded it with bullets. She opens the window and motioned Helena over. She took aim at a Soul in the form of a cat and fired. She hit it right in the stomach killing it. She handed it to Helena and let her look out. She took aim at a Soul in the form of a bird and tried to steady herself. She took a breath and pulled the trigger. The bullet hit the wing of the bird not killing it but just wounding it. Helena smikedand laughed a bit.

"I hit it... I actually hit it! I can't believe I made it!" She hugged Jane and cheered some more. "Guess I'm sticking with guns then!"

"Alright calm down, it's not dead yet. You have to out it out of its misery. Shoot to kill sweetie..." Jane put her hand on Helena's cheek and gave her a sad smile.

Helena looked out the window to see the bird bleeding intensely from its wing. She took aim again and shot its head. It stopped twitching and lay still on the ground.

"Its dead?"

"Yeah, its dead." Helena looked regretfully at the birds body.

"Have you seen what happens to their bodies after they die?" Helena shook her head.

"Then you're in for a surprise. Look." Jane pointed at the but birds body.

A stream of golden light floated through the air and gently touched the birds body. As it touched it, silver sparks sprouted from the body. Then a figure of a young woman in gold floated up then disappeared. Helena looked farther to see figures of many people in gold floating up and disappearing in the sky. For once the sky wasn't a dull grey color, but a beautiful golden sunset color.

"Wow..." Helena looked in awe as the figures disappeared leaving the sky grey again. "Who were those people?"

"Souls aren't just monsters. They're people who have been killed by one and turned into one. So when thy die their souls pass on."

"That was beautiful..." Helena wiped a teat away that had fell silently on her cheek.

"So we're not really killing them. Just helping them move on. Seems like that's the only way to escape."

Helena looked at Jane and held her hand. "I'm going to get you out of here, I promise."

"I know you will sweetie." Jane hugged Helena and teared up. "I know you will."
