Helena walked down her quiet street. It was a cloudy day and there was news of a storm. But all she wanted to do was go home. It was another bad day at school:she failed another test, heard another nasty rumor about her, and then had to stay after school for detention. She sighed to herself and kept on walking, her day heavy on her mind. She swept her choppy brown hair out of her face out of her blue eyes, and hoped to not get stuck in the rain.

Suddenly, it started to sprinkle lightly, them, the rain poured down, making deep puddles everywhere. "Just great,"Helena thought as she was dashing down the street trying to get home. She knew this was impossible; her house was another block away and her mom had already said she wasn't going to be picking her up. Her baggy black hoodie was getting drenched and her black Converse were soaked to her toes. She regretted not taking the bus thinking she could make it home before the rain started, but she felt that she needed some alone time with her thoughts.

As she was running she tripped and fell on the wet pavement, skinning her knees in the process. She sat up and groaned clutching her knees close to her. She couldn't get home now, her best chance was finding the closest house of someone she knew, but the chances of that were pretty slim. She wasn't exactly "Ms. Popular". She walked a few more yards and she stopped suddenly.

There was an old abandoned house that's occupants just left it as it was, furniture and all. It was a two-story Victorian style house that used to be a nice blue color, but after years of decay, it was grey and decrepit. Helena thought, "This is probably my best chance for shelter, even if it does seem like straight out of a ghost story." She limped up the creaky porch and tried the front door. Locked. She decided to try the back door, high-schoolers were always throwing parties here or trying to scare each other in the middle of the night. Hopefully they were stupid enough to leave a door open. She went around the side of the house and, to her luck, the back door opened. She limped inside, her clothes drenched, muddy, and her knees still bleeding. There was probably some towels in the bathroom that could use to dry herself off.

She walked up the stairs and opened different doors to see which one was the bathroom. The first one was the master bedroom with a big bed in the middle that was perfectly made and covered in dust. The next one looked like the kids' room. It had a bunk bed on one side of the room and a pile of toys on the other. She kept looking.

It was scary being alone in the house while a storm was overhead, giving flashes of lightning and roars of thunder. She was just waiting to turn around and expect to see a phantom standing behind her. She shook off her thoughts. She was scaring herself.

The next door, she finally found the bathroom. It was very big and its tiles were a mint-green color, but were covered in dust along with everything else. She hoped the towels weren't all eaten by moths. She opened the cupboard, and something jumped out. Something pushed on her chest, causing her to stumble backwards and trip, hitting her head on the sink, blacking out for a while.

When Helena woke up her head was killing her, adding to the pain in her knees. She remembered opening the cupboard then blacking put. She slowly got up and looked around the room:there was a black cat sitting on the toilet licking itself. It looked like her neighbor's cat who kept disappearing. This was probably where it went to.

The cat hissed at her then walked out to another room. She decided to follow it and see where it was going.

It went into a room that she had not seen before. It was empty except for a couple of crates and empty beer bottles;probably from the high schoolers who snuck in to drink. But, in the center of the room was something tall and covered by a sheet. She was reluctant to touch it, but her curiosity got the better of her.

Helena pulled down the sheet to see a tall old-fashioned mirror on front of her. She lookea at her reflection:she wasn't exactly pretty bit she wasn't ugly. Her face was a bit chubby and so was her stomach, but she usually wore baggy shirts or jackets and black ripped skinny jeans. Her hair was up to her shoulders and was cut choppily with a few black highlights in it. Because of how she dressed, she always had rumors spread about her. She put her hand against the mirror and sighed. Life sucked for her, "Great, I'm becoming depressed...but, hey, what can you do about it?"
