Chapter 2: Brooklyn
{Sky's Point of View}
Steve sat in the back of a cab with me on the way back to Brooklyn. He had been quiet during the past few days, as we packed up our stuff and moved out of the Stark Tower before returning to the S.H.I.E.L.D Hellicarrier to collect our last remaining belongings there.
Steve had always been quiet, but it had been the type of silence that I had enjoyed. This silence I didn't like, I hated it, in fact. And I didn't hate many things.
"Steve," I bite my lip nervously, eyeing the cab driver as he turned a corner. "Steve, please just say something. I hate this."
Steve snapped out of his trance, and his eyes looked like they lost some kind of light...like I'd taken him away from a memory.
"Hate what?" He asked, not making eye contact.
"I hate that you've literally spoken to me in one-word answers for the past week." I told him, trying not to raise my voice in frustration. "I get it, you lost Noel. I lost her too and she was the closest thing I had ever had to a friend. I know you used to have feelings for her, and I know you feel betrayed right now. All of us do, but that doesn't mean you have to take it out on me."
There was a long stretch of unbearable silence as Steve stared at the back of the passenger seat in the cab. His face was unreadable, which was near impossible for Steve, he was an open book.
After the cab driver had taken three more turns and stopped at two sets of lights, I finally got a response from him.
"I'm not taking it out on you." Steve tried to convince me, taking my hand. "I just having a little trouble dealing with this."
I swallowed down, hard. "Do you still have feelings for her? Is that what it is?"
"No!" He almost shouted immediately. "Sky, you know... You know you're the only girl for me."
I didn't have an answer for that. Sometimes I hated the fact he always managed to take words out of my mouth and use them against me in the sweetest way imaginable. And he'd done exactly that in that moment. And I didn't hate it that time.
As the cab pulled up on the curb out the front of Steve's apartment, I got out and grabbed his bags, and mine, and placed them on the sidewalk while Steve paid the driver.
Watching him make small talk with the driver and flashing him one of his signature smiles, I realised something. My mother had once told me that in a relationship you needed to be equals, but if you found someone who treated you like a princess, that was even better. I respectfully disagreed. Being showered with gifts and extravagance wasn't what I wanted.
I wanted an equal.
I wanted Steve.
The cabbie drove away and Steve grabbed his bags and let me take care of my own stuff.
When Steve unlocked the door and lead me inside, I dropped my things at the door and watched Steve place his bags down on the kitchen table.
"I love you." I blurted out and suddenly, I was filled with this overwhelming terror that made me quake in fear. I felt like I was going to throw up, that my heart was going to beat its way out of my chest.
Steve turned around slowly, a stunned expression on his face. "Pardon?"
Shakily, I repeated. "I love you, Steve Rogers."
Steve took three steps towards me and pulled me to him, making me shake even more. There were no thoughts in my head, which was a first. All I could feel was the terror of rejection pulsing through my veins, but more importantly, the overwhelming love I had for the man standing in front of me.
Steve leaned down and captured my lips with his own in a kiss before breaking away and resting his forehead lightly on my own.
"I love you too."
