Sandy and I are at the Sunshine Company for happy hour. I haven’t been back to visit since I moved across town. I miss this little place that used to be my pit stop. Apparently this evening happy hour turned plural, to happy hours! Looking at my watch I see it’s nearly 10pm and I’ve been here for nearly four hours already.
Leaning against the jukebox I try to hide back a yawn, holding my arm across my face. I’m bored with this group after being around them four hours. I’m ready to go home. I haven’t talked to any guys, even though I tried wearing a new cute outfit and applying more makeup than usual. I give up. Just because Liz and Steve met in this bar and are now married, doesn’t mean I’m going to meet my Mr. Right here. It’s time I let go of my five year plan. But then eyeing the front door I see a very attractive man walk in. He’s tall with green eyes and wears the most adorable knitted beanie which embraces his well defined face. As he smiles at the people in passing I notice large creased dimples running through his cheeks. He’s older, considering the lines running around his eyes, but he’s incredibly handsome. He carries himself with confident sex appeal.
I clear my throat, attempting to catch Sandy’s attention. The man walks in my direction, likely making his way to the restroom behind me. I watch him, my eyes fixed entirely on him. He stares back, avoiding running into people or stools, making his way closer and closer. Gliding past me, holding my stare, he smiles before entering the restroom.
“What the hell was that?” Sandy is looking at me, then in the direction the mystery man headed. Her mouth hangs open in awe. “That was like a pick from a movie. Jeez. Do you know him?”
“I’d certainly like to. Can you believe that?” What was it about him that captured my attention? Better yet what was it about me that caught his interest?
“You better do something when he comes out of the restroom. The way you two watched each other was crazy!”
I sip my cocktail slowly, attempting to appear in control. I’m picture how I look instead, darting my eyes back and forth waiting for him to exit. Once he does I will swing my head in the opposite direction, likely spilling my drink down the front of my shirt. He eventually exits, looking directly at me. As he walks past me for the second time, I visualize him gliding across the air. I actually visualize a lot more than that, but I’ll keep it to myself. The mystery man and I watch one another momentarily as we both pretend to visit with our individual groups of friends. His head cranks over his shoulder, giving me one last glance. He winks, and then looks back to his friends. He winked? My heart melts and my arms feel heavy. He has got to be one of the hottest guys I have seen in awhile. And he winked at me. How exciting!
“What are you going to do?” Sandy asks inquisitively.
“I don’t know! I have to talk to him. That was crazy. Did you see how cute he was? And he winked at me when he turned around.”
“I know! You better talk to him quick though, he looks like he may not be staying at this bar for long.”
I make an attempt to move smoothly to the bar myself in his direction. Seating myself between two nice looking fellas I lean slightly over the bar top, smiling and ignoring the bartender and both guys on the outside of me. Hmmm, what should I have to drink? Look at me dangit! Will I have beer or wine? Is he really ignoring me? “Miss, do you want a drink or not?” Oh dear, what do I feel like? How can he not notice me leaning so seductively against the bar? “Alright lady, let me know when you are ready to order.” I give up my charade, plopping myself back down on the barstool. It’s been ten minutes and he hasn’t looked at me! Not to mention now I have to make small talk with the two guys I decided to sandwich myself between. Gazing one last time over my shoulder, I see the mystery man tip the rim of his beanie slightly, saying goodbye to his friends. Don’t leave yet! We haven’t been introduced! Please look at me, just one more time. Swiftly I catch his eyes shoot in my direction. Did he see me? Is he going to walk over here? Dangit! No he’s turned back around. I need to take this encounter into my own hands. I slowly recede from the bar, taking careful steps backwards in the direction of the front door. Ten feet away, okay a couple more steps. Five feet away, I can sense myself getting closer and think I can smell a bit of his cologne. Keep going…just a couple more….BAM. “Oh pardon me” I say flirtatiously looking straight up into the chin of my mystery man. He smiles and I melt for the deep grin lines in his face.
