if one thing was obvious about clay, it was that he was a slight perfectionist. not only a perfectionist, but a hopeless romantic so the whole date planning thing was quite stressful for him.
"i'm sure everything is-"
"assuming everything is gonna be perfect isn't very promising."
he paced around the kitchen frantically in search of something he couldn't quite put his finger on, "what the fuck am i even looking for!"
kianna pushed herself up out of the armchair that was mainly used for decoration and made her way to the side of the counter clay was standing at, "bub, calm down. take a breather." she enclosed his hands in hers and gave them gentle strokes with her thumbs.
"sorry, sorry. i just don't wanna fuck this up."
"like i tried to say before, i'm sure everything will be perfect. it usually tends to be if you plan it."
"i sure hope so, i think i would quite literally die if you didn't like what i've got planned." with a gentle kiss pressed to her forehead, clay grabs his keys and a light jacket before they set off to the 'surprise' he had planned a few days prior.
the whole way there he kept rambling about anything and everything which further proves to kianna that he was the most nervous she's seen him in a while. she tried her best to soothe him, but it was pointless as he's the most stubborn person known to exist. she understood though with how his last girlfriend had treated him, nothing he ever did pleased her and it was always like he didn't exist when he was around her.
clay knew that kianna was trying to calm him down, but she didn't know why he was truly panicking. they weren't even truly an official couple, but he hoped tonight changed everything. he had liked kianna when they were younger but feelings were silly back then and his friends started looking at him like he was crazy when they found out he liked her. their standards in middle school were far different than his, they all wanted someone who had popularity and looks over personality.
"clay, stop doing that." his thoughts were shaken by kianna grabbing his hand.
"what? i'm not doing anything-"
"you're picking at your fingers. you only do that when you're really nervous and you never notice that you do it."
something about the fact she could memorize things he did that he wasn't even aware of made him fall even more in love with her.
"look, i'll just hold your hand so you can't do it anymore." she sends him a sweet smile while pulling his arm over into her lap so she could keep him distracted from doing his bad habit. "god, i feel like we're teenagers again. remember the night of your first soccer game in 9th grade? you swore you weren't nervous, but then you picked at your fingers until they bled."
"that was before i got my growth spurt, the guys on the other team were huge compared to me!"
it was weird that kianna was nearly as tall as he was at one point, now he towers over her with ease. "i miss when you were shorter, you were less intimidating back then."
the comment made him chuckle, the fact he was 'intimidating' to her just felt a little funny. it could be normal to be intimidated by the person you like, but he never thought he was intimidating to anyone.
"how far are we going for this date? it seems like we've been in the car for an hour."
"we have been in the car for an hour, kian. the place is a pretty good drive away-"
"i still wanna know where we're going"
"stop it, i'm not telling you!"
"pleaseeee?"
